The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on November 28, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by the Standard Showdown, which fired off this past weekend and resulted in a lot of players sending in their decklists and records to StandardShowdown@wizards.com. What'd you play?

What You Might Have Missed This Weekend

  1. Building the Japanese Community with Hareruya | Wizards of the Coast | Chapman Sim

Hareruya does community support and promotion right, and Sim outlined just how the Japanese store and tournament organizer made Grand Prix Chiba an event to remember.

  1. Top 5 Moments of Grand Prix Chiba 2016 | Wizards of the Coast | Chapman Sim

Speaking of Grand Prix Chiba, you can check out full event coverage here, but for an overview of the most memorable moments of the weekend, from free attendance to 500 students, to a first-time Grand Prix win, to passing the Monarch crown around the Top 8.

  1. Blue-Red Izzet Philosophy, Strengths, and Weaknesses: A Magic: The Gathering Color Pie Study! | The Mana Source | Wedge

Wedge is looking at color pair philosophies, and starts with Niv Mizzet's favorite color pair. He's a Dragon, and a Wedge, after my own heart.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Important Lessons for Brewers Everywhere | StarCityGames.com | Chris Lansdell

The Standard Showdown is bringing out the brewer in all of us (see: the deck of the day today, and the one tomorrow too!), so why not check in with a brewmaster extraordinaire to get some advice on how brewers brew?

  1. Windmill Slam: Kaladesh Draft #3 | MTGOAcademy | Denis Stranjak

Did you know that Denis Stranjak, funnyman from the Windmill Slam YouTube channel, also hosts draft videos on MTGOAcademy? True story! They're fun, they're entertaining, and they occasionally go slightly off the deep end. What more could you ask for out of a draft video? An Irish accent? He has that too!

  1. 6 Questions About Modern from the World Magic Cup | ChannelFireball | Paulo Vitro Damo da Rosa

There were a lot of interesting things going on in Modern at the World Magic Cup—but are they real or a product of the tournament structure?

What People Are Talking About

  1. We have a new Scale on our hands—the Rabiah Scale!

This was a funny one to gain traction over the weekend. For those who are confused (I expect that number is high), Mark Rosewater maintains a Storm Scale that measures how likely a mechanic is to return (or how unlikely). So the Rabiah Scale, as it is apparently now called, looks at how likely we are to revisit planes for future sets—as in, "We're probably not going to be returning to Rabiah (Arabian Nights), so it's a 10 on the Rabiah Scale."

Baby Jace!

Zac Elsik, for those who don't know, is the originator of the Lantern Control deck in Modern, so the guy knows his oddball control decks. I asked him to send in his list to standardshowdown@wizards.com, and, well...

Deck of the Day

  1. Blue-Black Metallurgic Summonings

For as little as I hear about this deck, I sure do play against versions of it online a lot. And usually lose to it.

The key interaction is Metallurgic Summonings and Part the Waterveil, which gives you a 6/6 and an extra turn without all of that awakening nonsense. But every part of the deck gets better with Metallurgic Summonings in play. Suddenly Glimmer of Genius, already a strong control card, comes with a free, instant-speed 4/4. Essence Extraction drops a 3/3 into play. And Torrential Gearhulk gets downright silly, bringing a friend along with whatever spell you cast.

And if you get in a pickle or can't seem to keep a creature around, Summonings can sacrifice itself to bring back every spell in your graveyard. This particular list went 4-0 at a Standard Showdown, so I would highly recommend taking it out for a spin.
