Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on December 9, 2016. Today's Update is brought to you by the DailyMTG holiday schedule.

We're getting close, so I just want to make sure you're all aware. On December 19, we go into "Best of" mode, where we'll be re-running the best DailyMTG articles of the year. During that time, the Daily Magic Update will also be on hiatus, as I lounge around mostly figuring out how to jam Cloudblazer into all of my Commander decks. Daily will resume its normal publishing schedule on January 2, and the Update will return on January 3.

Today's Musts

  1. Best of 2016 Awards | Masters of Modern | Alex Kessler and Ben Bateman

2016 was a weird year for the world at large, but in Magic there were a ton of things worth celebrating. And discussing. And sometimes whistling while ignoring completely. Kessler and Bateman cover all of it, combing through the year month-by-month in the world of Modern to pick the best of the year. But it's Modern-centric, so I can't even really hope for a Cloudblazer plug or even a whisper of Panharmonicon.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. The Return of Mardu | | Adrian Sullivan

Sullivan told you so, and he's here to tell you he told you so. And why, too.

  1. Heart of Kiran and Three New Planeswalkers | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin

The Top Level guys explore what Heart of Kiran means for Standard while also covering the new planeswalkers who might be crewing it.

  1. Have No Fear | The Girlfriend Bracket | Erin Campbell, Hallie Santo, Katie Neal, and Kriz Schultz

Grand Prix, SCG Opens, and local game stores, oh my! The women of the Girlfriend Bracket talk all of that, plus a No Fear challenge from Kriz.

  1. Living Out of a Suitcase: My Real Superpower | MTGMintCard | Chapman Sim

This one is a bit less about Magic and a bit more about the philosophy of travel that can often go with being on the road for Magic events. The article is personal, introspective, and chock full of advice for the potential world traveler. It's a bit different from the normal offering, but, hey, that's the best kind of article to highlight.

  1. Puzzling Improvements | Hareruya | Pierre Dagen

Dagen thinks the way to be a great Magic player is to solve puzzles—and he talks about how to do just that.

  1. Magical Christmas Land | Men from MODO | David Savill and Travis Sowers

Even though they start off with a groan-worthy joke ("Say hello, Travis." "Hello, Travis!"), 'tis the time of year to get all festive, so give this Christmas-themed episode a chance. I mean, they talk about Panharmonicon right off the bat, so that's enough of a present for me.

What People Are Talking About

Pretty much what the tweet said. The image blew up on Reddit and Twitter yesterday after a survey went out testing packaging design concepts. But it was just a survey, not a crystal ball. We make set name announcements on Announcement Day, not in surveys being sent out to the public.

The former Magic Pro and Wizards employee continues to ride on, closing out the week today on the Friday episode of Jeopardy!. Alex, I'll take Mulldrifters for $200.

Deck of the Day

  1. Red-Green...Land Destruction? That's a thing?

Apparently so! The deck below went just 2-2 at a Standard Showdown, but man those two who lost to it must have been frustrated. R&D has worked to get land destruction out of Standard, but where there's a will, there's a way.

This just shows you that you can play whatever you want. Sure this player went 2-2, but I guarantee they were cackling with every destroyed land. You do you, land destruction person. The Standard Showdown is a pretty good spot for that.
