The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on January 3, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Ornithopter—it's both the reprint we deserve and the reprint we need.

Today's Previews

A one-week preview cycle is a bit of a task. We're jamming more and more preview cards into each day to keep up and keep you satiated. So I'm going to list all of the non-DailyMTG previews (with links), and only comment on a couple of them. After all, it's not me you're here for—it's the previews. I know my place.

  1. Ornithopter | Wizards of the Coast Korean Facebook Page

Two tidbits here. One, my tradition of having to point the English-speaking world in the direction of the Korean preview card continues, as it has for every set. They always get one. Two, we played a small trick by not including the new Aether Revolt cards in the Masterpieces article, making it seem like everything we showed on Christmas/Christmas Eve was a reprint—including Ornithopter. But it was in the set all along! Hey, I'm amused by it.

  1. Pacification Array | Windmill Slam

This was the first preview card for Windmill Slam, and they did a bang-up job with the video.

  1. Yahenni, Undying Partisan | Gathering Magic

Ah yes, the Vampire Aetherborn people have been looking forward to!

  1. Rishkar, Peema Renegade | Top Level Podcast
  2. Rishkar's Expertise | The Command Zone

As you can probably tell, this is a cycle! Each color has a legend and a corresponding expertise. Blue and red are still yet to be revealed!

Check out the Command Zone's video, well, right here.

  1. Release the Gremlins | LoadingReadyRun

Well, at least we'll be able to restart civilization in a few years...

  1. Everything else to check out that had been published by the time the Daily Update was published.

What People Are Talking About

Fatal Push, the Expertises—there's a lot to get wide-eyed about in this set. Check out the previews above and the Card Image Gallery to see what people are raving about.

This one was from over break, but I made a note to myself to make sure to share this when I returned. A great piece I didn't want to have buried under the holidays.

Deck of the Day

  1. Jeskai Saheeli | ChannelFireball | Neal Oliver

Last week, while I was enjoying snow and cookies, Neal Oliver posted an article about three cards that could possibly make the leap in Standard with a little help from Aether Revolt. One such deck was a Jeskai Saheeli brew that Oliver was kind enough to provide a list for. He said the deck needed three things to push Saheeli Rai into the limelight:

  1. A midrange environment where she doesn't just get killed by Smuggler's Copter;
  2. Good four-drops like Thought-Knot Seer she can copy; and
  3. A shell that lets you curve into her and after casting her, since her mana cost can be restrictive.

I can't say how the third point will turn out, but the first point is certainly helped by the reveal of Fatal Push and Decommission, both of which can handle Smuggler's Copter with ease. As to the second point, there are certainly some of those, but some of my favorite are the two Quicksmiths (Rebel and Spy—find them in the Card Image Gallery), since they can always simply target themselves (remember: Saheeli makes them artifacts) and get the effect right away. There might be more to come as well.
