Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on January 4, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Baral, Chief of Compliance. You will read today's Update. You will scroll down below. You will enjoy Baral's Expertise. Or there will be consequences.

Today's Previews

A one-week preview cycle is a bit of a task. We're jamming more and more preview cards into each day to keep up and keep you satiated. So I'm going to list all of the non-DailyMTG previews (with links), and only comment on a couple of them. After all, it's not me you're here for—it's the previews. I know my place.

  1. Baral's Expertise |
  2. Baral, Chief of Compliance | ChannelFireball

The blue addition to our legend/Expertise cycle, and certainly my favorite of the bunch. I plan to pick up a premium foil Baral and put it straight in my foiled-out Azami, Lady of Scrolls Commander deck. (Yup, I'm that guy.)

  1. Shock | Wizards of the Coast Chinese (Traditional) Facebook Page

This one came as a bit of a...surprise. Many people were...startled by this reprint. I can certainly tell that seeing this particular burn spell return was...stunning to many.

  1. Lightning Runner | Wizards of the Coast German Twitter account (Community Translation)

This seems like the kind of card you would write a pub song about. "She's quick, she's fast, she won't be last, and she'll untap your entire teeeaaammm." Or, you know, something better than that.

  1. Skyship Plunderer | Chinese Social Media

Normally I'd link to an accurate community translation, but since this original source isn't even terribly accessible to many outside of China, I thought I'd do you a solid and simply show off the card in English here:

  1. Everything else

Aethertide Whale | Russian Wizards of the Coast VK (Community Translation)
Call for Unity | BigMagic (Click the white box) (Community Translation)
Hidden Stockpile | MTGOpener
Indomitable Creativity| Wizards of the Coast Asia Pacific Facebook Page
Outland Boar | Riot Pixels (Community Translation)
Secret Salvage | MTGGoldfish
Weldfast Engineer | Riot Pixels (Community Translation)
Walking Ballista | German Preview Video (Community Translation)

  1. Yet to come

There are a few more we expect to drop sometime today. Pay attention to these outlets:

If I'm feeling saucy, I might show off a card or two myself (@blakepr). And there's one other outlet...

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Magic Mics | Evan Erwin, Rueben Bresler, and Erin Campbell

It's a special preview edition of Magic Mics tonight, as Evan, Rueben, and Erin reveal their Aether Revolt card and very likely delve into the rest of the previews that have been revealed so far.

Top 25

  1. No changes

No big events means no changes. Wouldn't you rather be talking about Aether Revolt anyway?

Deck of the Day

  1. Sultai Tezzeret | ChannelFireball | Frank Karsten

If any player knows how to build with artifacts, it's Frank "Affinity Forever" Karsten. He's got a new brew with Tezzeret the Schemer, the new planeswalker from Aether Revolt, in his article today. I could tell you all about what makes this deck sweet (hint: many artifacts and Contraband Kingpin), but Karsten wrote hundreds of words on the deck and, ya know, made it, so I'll leave you to check out the decklist and then check out his article on the topic.
