The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on January 16, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It's an American holiday, but it's one everyone should know a bit about.

What You Might Have Missed This Weekend

  1. In Response: Aggressive Bannings, MTGO, and Pauper Support—A Magic: The Gathering Debate | Tolarian Community College | The Professor and Josh Lee Kwai

The weekly Magic debate show rolls on. Too bad last week was so quiet there was so little to talk about. Seriously, it's mostly just Josh complimenting Prof's tie. It's a really nice tie.

  1. The Most Underrated and Overrated Cards in Aether Revolt | ChannelFireball | Mike Sigrist

Three overrated and three underrated cards from Sigrist were ready for your review over the weekend, but if you didn't get the chance to chime in about how wrong he is about your favorite/least favorite card, there's still time!

  1. Double Deck Tech: Improvise in Aether Revolt Standard! | Strictly Better MTG | Dev

It's two, two, deck techs for the price of one! This one time only, Dev doubles up your fun with some improvise-fueled decklists. Here, he teaches you the ways of the turn-two Maverick Thopterist, and oh so much more.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

Two World Champions, one review, zero Emrakuls to worry about.

  1. Combo Decks from Aether Revolt | Gathering Magic | Abe Sargent

Want to casually combo off without Cats? Care to combine some of Aether Revolt's most curious cards? Sargent has what you need to confound and confuse your opponents at home.

  1. The Magic Bracket

We haven't mentioned this since it started, but it's worth noting that The Magic Bracket—a voting bracket that pits every Magic card against another in a massive bracket—is still going strong! Check out the latest Tumblr post to see what's going on and if your favorite card is still in the running.

What People Are Talking About

Clearly, Tezzeret just can't be stopped! How can the Gatewatch possibly compete with such manual dexterity?!

Anyone else get a little pang of jealousy seeing all the cool pulls over the weekend? Unless you opened something cool yourself, in which case—share your pictures!

The first phase of the Magic Pro Tour Team Series has begun! You'll certainly be seeing more as we get closer to Pro Tour Aether Revolt, but here's one of the first teams to show its stuff on social media—Team Top Level!

Deck of the Day

  1. Black-Green Cryptolith Combo | Gathering Magic | Andrew Jessup

Jessup has a number of decklists in his article today, but this one in particular caught my eye. Here, Jessup is combining Cryptolith Rite—an eminently breakable card—with Paradox Engine and Lifecrafter's Bestiary to go off, much like the Glimpse of Nature decks of old. The key is to get a few creatures, Cryptolith Rite, Paradox Engine, and Lifecrafter's Bestiary all working in sync to let you draw through your deck with each new creature you draw. You can sometimes do without Cryptolith Rite with enough creatures that make mana naturally, meaning the deck can play out like a normal black-green creatures deck with some sacrifice synergies before turning the corner and becoming something else entirely.

It's almost certain someone will try to crack Cryptolith Rite and Paradox Engine, and this kind of shell, especially adding in Lifecrafter's Bestiary, is a really strong start.
