By Blake Rasmussen

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on January 18, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Quinton Hoover's fantastic art.

Today's Must

  1. Top 20 Standard Cards from Aether Revolt | | Todd Stevens

Most lists, they go to ten. Maybe three or five if they're not numbered. If they're saucy, they go to eleven. The most expansive do a Top 3 in every color. But not Todd Stevens. Todd Stevens doesn't hold back. He's got a Top 20 list of Aether Revolt cards specifically for Standard. There's a lot of brewing to do in a refreshed format, and Stevens lays out which cards he thinks you should be paying attention to in Standard.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Aether Revolt Set Review | The Command Zone | Josh Lee Kwai and Jimmy Wong

The Command Zone crew sinks their teeth into Aether Revolt, and it's delicious.

  1. Preview of Hoover Art Sales | Gathering Magic | Mike Linnemann

When Quinton Hoover passed away in 2013, he left behind an artistic legacy that runs deep in Magic, and now some of that art could be yours. Linnemann interviews Hoover's family about the collection, some stories about their father, and what art the collection has to offer.

  1. Aether Revolt Set Review: Rare and Mythic Rare | Limited Resources | Marshall Sutcliffe and Luis Scott-Vargas

Wondering what rares and mythic rares you should be excited to crack in a draft? Or which ones you should pass for better commons or uncommons? In a scant 1 hour 52 minutes, Marshall and LSV discuss every single rare and mythic rare from Aether Revolt with an eye toward Limited.

If you're looking for more Limited-focused Aether Revolt podcasts (What a world we live in where you have multiple options for that specific category!), check out Constructed Criticism today, as they look at the Top 3 commons in each color.

  1. Jump in the Pool | Magic the Amateuring | Meghan Wolff and Maria Bartholdi

A new episode of Flavor Text Theater, Magical Christmas Land and How to Stop Living In It, and Meghan attempting to tell Maria why the way she build her Prerelease pool was totally wrong. All of this and more on the latest episode of Magic the Amateuring!

  1. Deck Tech: Blue-Black Control in Aether Revolt Standard! | Strictly Better MTG | Dev

Dev and his cat hang out and tell you about Blue-Black Control. It was the cat's idea, but Dev really perfected the list.

  1. Top 10 BEST Cards to Draft in the Legacy Cube | Magic the Amateuring | Judge April

The Legacy Cube is going on right now on Magic Online (much to my free time's chagrin), and Judge April, Cube connoisseur, is here to clue you in on the best cards in the cube.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Magic Mics | Evan Erwin, Reuben Bresler, and Erin Campbell (Editor's Note: This has been canceled tonight after this article was originally published.)

It's Wednesday, which must mean it's time for Magic Mics, the talking heads Magic show that talks about, well, everything. It also means fifteen percent of the population will, at some point today, utter the phrase "hump day." It's science.

Tune in tonight at 11 p.m ET/8 p.m. PT for Magic Mics on

Top 25

  1. No Changes

No premier event means no changes. We'll get some big changes the closer we get to the week after Pro Tour Aether Revolt. But, for the time being, all is calm.

  1. Sharuum's Puzzle Box | Tumblr

Like Magic puzzles? The ones where you have to solve a scenario through some trickery of the cards in order to not die, or win with an empty library, or rub your head while patting your stomach? Well, over on Tumblr, Sharuum's Puzzle Box has been sharing new puzzles since August, with 25 so far and no signs of stopping. Check them out for a puzzle fix and flex your mind muscles with some real head-scratchers.

Oh, and if you like puzzles, Sean Uy has his regular puzzle over on Gathering Magic today!

Deck of the Day

  1. Black-Green Delirium | ChannelFireball | Brian DeMars

You can't keep a good deck down, but you can imprison its best card in the moon. Black-Green Delirium, at points the boogeyman of Standard, lost its main reason to be—Emrakul, the Promised End. But it didn't lose its 74 other cards (including sideboard), so Brian DeMars thinks there still might be something there. Ishkanah, the Grafwidow is still, after all, quite the Magic card.

It's impossible to replace Emrakul, but the deck does still get to go a bit big when it casts Traverse the Ulvenwald thanks to a pair of Gearhulks—Verdurous Gearhulk and Noxious Gearhulk—that still let it go over the top of other creatures. Just not "Emrakul over the top."

And that's okay. What's more, it might still be very good.
