The February 7, 2017 Update

Posted in Daily Magic Update on February 7, 2017

By Nicholas Wolfram

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on February 7, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by local game stores, ambassadors for the game of Magic.

Today's Must

  1. PT AER Report—Champion. Part 1: The Cards

The newest Pro Tour Champion, Lucas Esper Barthoud, is compiling a multi-part report on his impressions from Pro Tour Aether Revolt. Reading about a Pro Tour from the winner's perspective is always interesting and educational, so check out Part 1 here!

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Shifting Gears to Beat Mardu Vehicles | StarCityGames.com | Jadine Klomparens

Six of the Top 8 decks at Pro Tour Aether Revolt this weekend were Mardu Vehicles, so it's pretty safe to declare that as the deck to beat in the coming weeks. Jadine has some sage advice on how you can do just that.

  1. Team ChannelFireball Fire Deck Tech: Jund Energy Aggro | ChannelFireball | Martin Jůza

Martin Jůza's Jund Energy Aggro may not have made it far in the Top 8, but it still made it to the Top 8. For a deck archetype that had gotten very little discussion, that's a pretty impressive feat. Martin himself discusses how he went about selecting the cards for the deck, including an overview of the cards he didn't pick and why.

  1. Modern Elves Deck Tech with Meghan | Magic the Amateuring | Meghan Wolff

With tribal synergy built in on the design level, Elves have long been a favorite standby for tribal decks. Modern is host to plenty of these synergistic Elves, and Meghan has some great ideas on how to best use these nimble humanoids to overwhelm your opponent.

  1. Emerging Metagame Narratives from Pro Tour Aether Revolt | ChannelFireball | Brian DeMars

The discussion around the metagame can sometimes be as important to shaping its future as the decks being played. Following Pro Tour Aether Revolt, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding Mardu Vehicles and Heart of Kiran, and some ideas need to be reined in before they get too out of control.

  1. Five Things That Make a Local Game Store Great | TCG Player | Denis Stranjak

Store owners and their employees often end up as de facto ambassadors for Magic to new players. As someone passionate about new players having a positive first experience with Magic so that they return in the future, Denis has some reflections on his history with different LGSs and what he believes are the most important things that make a store great.

  1. Rhystic Scrying: Mogis, God of Slaughter | MTG Mint Card | Freyalise

Mogis loves slaughter of any kind, but his favorite kind of slaughter is that of your opponents. With a slew of punishing enchantments and creatures, this Commander brew from Freyalise aims to flay your opponents' life totals away turn by turn, possibly without a single one of your creatures ever attacking.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Vintage Super League

Season 6 Vintage Super League returns tonight! The four players in Group A will be battling it out in a round-robin tournament to make it to the top bracket for the next round. Catch all the action on twitch.tv/magic, starting tonight at 5 p.m. PT!

Deck of the Day

  1. Martin Jůza's Jund Energy Aggro

With plenty of energy to bolster cheap creatures that hit hard and fast, Martin Jůza was able to pilot this deck to the Top 8 this weekend at Pro Tour Aether Revolt. While it may not have been able to keep up with the Mardu Vehicles decks littering the other spots in the Top 8, we may see this deck making a resurgence in the near future as the metagame continues to evolve, so keep an eye out!
