The February 13, 2017 Update

Blake is the content manager for DailyMTG.com, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on February 13, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Dave Pargh. Because this. And this.

What You Might Have Missed This Weekend

  1. Top 5 Moments of Grand Prix Pittsburgh | Wizards of the Coast | Corbin Hosler

If you have a ton of free time, you could check out the entire coverage of Grand Prix Snakes Pittsburgh, or watch the replays on twitch.tv/magic. But if you just need a quick recap of the weekend—including that now-infamous costumed Round 7 feature match—this is the article for you.

  1. The Magic Art of Karl Kopinski | The Magic Man Sam

Sam's back with another "Art of" video, and it's just as engaging and engrossing as the previous ones. This time he tackles Karl Kopinski, a self-taught artist with a unique, distinguished style. It's basically candy for art lovers.

  1. A Guide to Alesha, Who Smiles at Death Commander / EDH for Magic: The Gathering | Tolarian Community College | The Professor

While we're showing off well-designed videos, how about The Professor's take on playing with Alesha, Who Smiles at Death in Commander? The popular Commander provides a number of options for players who want to get their Mardu on—or just want to recur Karmic Guide as much as possible. If only Alesha played nicely with Cloudblazer . . .

  1. ChannelFireball Goes Inside Pro Tour Testing

ChannelFireball posted two items this weekend that take you inside Pro Tour testing. On the text side, Ondřej Stráský showed off his testing for the first few days of preparation with ChannelFireball Ice. On the video side, Team ChannelFireball Fire posted their meeting where they discussed the Limited rankings of rares and mythic rares. Bonus picture of overall rankings included.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Deck Selection in a Rock-Paper-Scissors Metagame | Gathering Magic | Andrew Jessup

Mardu Vehicles, Black-Green Constrictor, and various Copycat decks have shown themselves to be the big three of this Standard season. Knowing that, how do you choose? And how am I going to forget all of this and just play Panharmonicon anyway?

  1. Video: Four-Color Saheeli In Standard! | StarCityGames.com | Gerry Thompson

Gerry played a deck similar to this very one at Pro Tour Aether Revolt and went 7-3.

That's it. That's my entire pitch. If that collection of words (Gerry. 7-3. Pro Tour.) doesn't excite you, then this video probably isn't for you.

  1. Memorial tournament brings together Magic: The Gathering | The Herald Bulletin | Christopher Stephens

A sad, yet uplifting story about a tournament held to memorialize an Indiana man after he, Riley Oberhart, and his father, Daniel Oberhart, died in a car crash. More than 200 people from the local Magic community showed up to remember the Magic player's life.

What People Are Talking About

The sanctioning window opened for a number of store-level events, which means the Wizards Play Network has announced to store owners what events will be available to run during Amonkhet. Typically these types of event listings go under the radar, but because we're trying some new things, people noticed.

Why are we trying new things? Well, Elaine Chase just happens to have an article on that very topic today.

The Girlfriend Bracket crew (you can listen to their latest episode here) is calling it at an even 100 episodes, just the right number for syndication. They've been awesome content creators and great parts of the community, and we certainly wish them well. They just did episode 90, so they're not quite done yet. You've got ten more weeks, every Friday, on Gathering Magic.

Deck of the Day

  1. Ryan Hare's Black-Green Constrictor

Congratulations to Ryan Hare, who waded through a Top 8 lousy with Snakes to win Grand Prix Pittsburgh with his take on the Black-Green Constrictor archetype. Counters for everyone!
