The February 24, 2017 Update

Posted in Daily Magic Update on February 24, 2017

By Nicholas Wolfram

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on February 24, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by the new Modern metagame.

Today's Must

  1. Slithering to 1st Place in Pittsburgh | ChannelFireball | Ryan Hare

The newly crowned Grand Prix Pittsburgh 2017 Champion brings some insight into his road to the top of the GP, including background on his brewing process and how he successfully piloted Black-Green Constrictor during the tournament.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Charity Gauntlet! | Dragon's Den Gaming

Dragon's Den Gaming of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, will be hosting and streaming a 24-hour Modern event this weekend to benefit their local schools' game clubs. All proceeds from the event will be going to charity, and players will be competing for the sweet prize of an Underground Sea, so don't expect to see any punches being pulled during the stream!

  1. Grixis Control Keeps Me Hanging On | StarCityGames.com | Shaheen Soorani

With StarCityGames.com Indianapolis Open coming up this weekend, everyone is talking about what Standard and Modern decks might be taking the top prize. The current Modern deck to beat is Death's Shadow, and Soorani thinks that his Grixis Control brew may just have enough answers to take it down.

  1. Abzan Company This Weekend | ChannelFireball | Brian DeMars

Just because Collected Company left Standard five months ago doesn't mean it is gone forever. Collected Company still has a welcoming home in Modern, and DeMars plans to show just how sturdy that home is this weekend at SCG Indy.

  1. License to Thrill | StarCityGames.com | Matt Higgs

Consulate Dreadnought is easily the most difficult Vehicle to crew, and with a payoff of only 1 extra power, it often isn't worth the effort. But with Siege Modification, Start Your Engines, and Peacewalker Colossus running around, do you really need to crew it the traditional way? Higgs doesn't think so, and he has an alternative Standard Vehicles deck to prove it.

  1. Grasping the New Modern Metagame | MTG Mint Card | Lee Shi Tian

Last month, the Modern metagame got hit with a massive one-two punch between the new bannings (of Golgari Grave-Troll and Gitaxian Probe) and the release of Aether Revolt. With things still settling after the shake-up, some powerful new decks have emerged, and players are scrambling to find answers. Lee thinks Dredge might still be the answer despite the loss of Golgari Grave-Troll, and all he asks is that you listen to his case.

What People Are Talking About

This is what designers think people mean by "the birds and the bees."

Deck of the Day

  1. Ryan Hare's Turbo Snek Remix

Ryan Hare is not satisfied with first place. Despite going home as Champion after Grand Prix Pittsburgh, he is continuing to tweak his winning deck in hopes of staying ahead of the metagame. This is his latest iteration, currently modified to offer more consistent answers against Copycat Saheeli.
