Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on March 6, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Josh Utter-Leyton. 2017 is basically the year of Wrapter, so the least I can do is give him a day.

What You Might Have Missed This Weekend

  1. The Magic Online Championship

If you missed any of this unique event, there are a number of ways to get the low-down.

  • Top 5 Moments | Mike Rosenberg—The shortest and fastest recap option offers five moments that defined the weekend.
  • Full Text Coverage—Longer and less succinct, but chock full of information about the entire weekend.
  • Hours and Hours of Twitch Archive Footage—Sleep through the weekend? Just come out of a coma? Want to relive the full weekend? The best way to do so is to just watch all the video footage in the Twitch archives.
  1. The Magic Art of Nils Hamm | TheMagicManSam

TheMagicManSam's videos are not to be missed if you love art. So, uh, don't miss this.

  1. The Power Level of New Card Types with Patrick Chapin | Masters of Modern | Ben Bateman and Alex Kessler

This one went up late on Friday, but is definitely worth a listen. Patrick Chapin swings by the Masters of Modern podcast to talk about the difficulty of balancing new card types. From planeswalkers to Equipment to Vehicles, Chapin talks with the crew about how and when we got it right, and what it took to get there.

  1. This Set Is Insane! | The Mana Pool | Chewie and the Dorks

Not done gushing over Modern Masters 2017 Edition? Let Chewie and the Dorks do some for you while they explore all the rarity shifts, old Standard powerhouses, and powerful cards coming to packs near you.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. When Brewers Attack! (An Established Metagame) | | Chris Lansdell

When a format's metagame gets firmly established, that's when the brewers find the cracks they can exploit. We saw it with the recent rise of Temur Tower, and Chris Lansdell thinks there might be a few more spaces to dive into in Standard to crack this thing wide open.

  1. Class Is in Session: Vestigial Lists | | Jadine Klomparens

Klomparens is constantly on the ball for topics that no one else has written about, and the vestigial list is the latest concept she's pioneering. The idea is simple—there are a lot of cards that get left in decklists simply because they were there before, even if they no longer serve the same purpose. Klomparens points a few out and talks about how to excise them from your lists going forward.

  1. How's That for Modern Support? | Hipsters of the Coast | Rich Stein

Rich Stein doesn't think Modern is dying or losing support. He sees it getting exactly the kind of support it needs with Modern Masters 2017 in what might be this morning's most interesting read.

What People Are Talking About

Fun fact: Josh Utter-Layton was, just a month ago, not qualified for the next Pro Tour. Now, after a Grand Prix victory and a Magic Online Championship trophy, Utter-Leyton is qualified for basically everything—plus, it gives his Hall of Fame resume a boost for when he's up for consideration later this year. Not that he needed it.

That reaction when you're commenting and one of the players draws the perfect card to win the game.

Deck of the Day

  1. Josh Utter-Leyton's Mardu Ballista

Want to make like you're the Magic Online Champion? This is the tool Josh Utter-Leyton used to carve his way to the title, pairing the format's best removal, best planeswalker, most efficient creatures, and most powerful Vehicles into one tight package. Then, he went one better and crafted a sideboard that allowed his aggressive deck to turn into something more midrangy—a transformation he utilized all the way to Platinum status.
