Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on March 17, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Max. Max is a good doggo. 12/10, would equip to a Walking Ballista.

What to Watch This Weekend

  1. Grand Prix Porto Alegre | | Saturday and Sunday, 7:15 a.m. ET/4:15 a.m. PT

Vehicles and Copy Cat are targets 1a and 1b as Standard is featured this weekend in Porto Alegre. Will everyone aim for them, or will it be more of a "join 'em" kind of crowd? The South American crowds always get up for Grand Prix, so whether players choose to beat 'em or join 'em, it's going to be exciting.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Leaning on a Basic Mountain | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin

Last weekend, at least one player chose "beat 'em," and came away with a Grand Prix Top 8 for his troubles—Ben Stark. Flores and Chapin discuss his Jund Energy deck, and how a single basic Mountain turned it all around. Patrick Sullivan guest stars.

  1. Modern Masters 2017 Draft Guide: Archetype/Strategy Review for Magic: The Gathering! | The Mana Source | Wedge

If there weren't enough Draft guides from you in yesterday's update, well, here's more!

  1. Signals | Limited Time Only | Spencer Howland and Danny Cathro

It's not Modern Masters-specific, but reading signals is a pretty important part of any Draft experience. You have to have a good sense of what colors you should pair with all of your blue cards, after all.

  1. Five Story and Flavor Predictions for Amonkhet | Hipsters of the Coast | Beck Holden

Wow, you won't believe which of these predictions he got right! You also won't know until Amonkhet actually releases, because I'm not telling. Actually, until Hour of Devastation, because one of these predictions stretches into that set. So, ya know, you've got a bit.

  1. Grand Prix Barcelona Champions Report | Hareruy English | Petr Sochůrek

Sure, we're all excited for Modern Masters 2017 Edition and Amonkhet (very excited), but if you think I'm going to miss a strong Grand Prix report from the Champion, you don't know me at all. And I like to think of us as good friends. You and I. Not myself and Petr Sochůrek, though I'm sure we'd get along swimmingly.

  1. Goblin Games a haven for Magic: The Gathering players | The Kansas State Collegian | Bryan Worcester

Ye ole "local paper writes a profile on local game store" trope. I love these kinds of articles, and this one is pretty well done. That said, man is that ending a downer for an otherwise upbeat story. It's like Worcester thought "Hmm, this is a pretty fun, uplifting story—maybe I should end on a depressing note?"

What People Are Talking About

Ladies and gentlemen, start your drafting engines!

Max is a good dog. Would pet, even with collar. 12/10.

Deck of the Day

  1. Jund Energy Aggro

Thanks to Ben Stark's Top 8 at Grand Prix New Jersey last weekend, we've seen a resurgence in Winding Constrictor decks online, including this 5-0 from Teletender in a Magic Online Standard Competitive League. Stark took the base black-green deck—the energy version—added red for Unlicensed Disintegration and, voila, the deck is back near the top of the scrapheap again.

The deck is aggressive, synergistic, and plenty powerful enough to hang with Mardu Vehicles and Four-Color Copy Cat.

I'd also like to point out that, with the exception of Monday where I posted the Grand Prix-winning deck, every deck I've posted this week has been 1) winning, and 2) not Vehicles or Copy Cat. It's definitely possible to succeed with decks other than the big two, so hats off to the brewers out there, the ones who see two decks at the top of the metagame and only envision giant bullseyes on them. Here's to you.
