Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on March 24, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Mike McArtor. Yesterday was the two-year anniversary of his passing, and we miss him every day.

What to Watch This Weekend

  1. Grand Prix Orlando | | Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET/2 p.m. UTC

We're nearly done with Aether Revolt-Kaladesh Limited—but we're not done yet. Orlando plays host to the final individual Grand Prix in the format (there's a Team Limited Grand Prix in Mexico City coming up), and for at least one player, it's going to be the happiest place on earth.

  1. Commander the Gathering Live | | Friday at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET

I'm shining the spotlight on this event with the caveat that I have not seen this group stream before, but the idea seems cool and potentially fun if you love Commander—a live Commander stream in a local game store. The group is in Australia, so they basically live in the future. Don't be confused if they say it's Saturday or if someone gets eaten by a snake. That just happens down there.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Mastering Dynavolt Tower | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin

Chapin thinks the latest Dynavolt Tower list from Victor Fernando Silva that won the Grand Prix last weekend is a masterpiece—and a key player in Standard moving forward. Unfortunately, "Chapin enjoys tournament-winning blue deck" is the free space on Top Level Bingo, so you probably didn't get any closer there.

If you want more on Dynavolt Tower, Chapman Sim covers three important elements of the deck here.

  1. Rating the Legendary Creatures in Modern Masters 2017 | | Bennie Smith

I love semi-arbitrary ratings of things. The best burger. The top blood and sand. The best French fries. The best—well, you get the idea. I like food. But I also like Magic (clearly), and I enjoyed this totally subjective rating of the potential Commanders found in Modern Masters 2017 Edition. Even if I would never in a million years rate Venser, Shaper Savant a 2. In my view, it sends a message: "This could be Azami, Lady of Scrolls, but I don't even need her."

  1. Drafting with Numot—Modern Masters 2017 #1 | Kenji Egashira

There's a lot of excitement in the streaming community over Modern Masters right now, so don't be shocked to see a lot of these types of videos coming from consistent streamers like Kenji Egashira.

  1. The Top 15 Modern Decks | GAM Podcast | Gerry Thompson and Michael Majors

Even down one Andrew Brown (who soundly defeated me at the company Modern Masters release event—he's doing quite well for himself here), the GAM Podcast marches on as Thompson and Majors take a serious look at the Top 15—yes, 15—decks in Modern. In an hour-long podcast, that's 4 minutes per deck, which is a pretty good chuck. Yay math!

  1. The Pursuit of Happiness | The Girlfriend Bracket | Erin Campbell, Hallie Santo, Katie Neal, and Kriz Schultz

This week, the crew covers Modern Masters 2017 Edition, a judge conference, recent community talk on Planeswalkers, and the very definition of success.

What People Are Talking About

  1. #FridayMTG

The FridayMTG hashtag is a hashtag used by a number of smaller Magic content creators typically focused on casual Magic to highlight their work and that of others. You'll primarily hear from @MagicwithZuby and @KitchenTableMTG, but they do a good job of highlighting other content creators who might be new or under the radar. It's kind of like a day of Community Spotlights.

  1. What's your worst tell?

Mine is a weird one—when I'm confident of what I have in my hand and basically feel invincible, I lay my cards in hand face down on the table. I also have one pretty similar to this person.

Deck of the Day

  1. Blue-Red Zombie Emerge

As the format turns . . .

Tier 1 might be solidly locked, but tier 2 continues to churn interesting decks to the top, then recycle them and bring them back later. The flavor of this week is Blue-Red Zombie Emerge, which has seen an uptick in online play and in decks going 5-0 in Competitive Standard League. This one from Magic Online player fil2hot did just that, setting a fevered pace past its opponents.

The deck has a ton of play against the top decks. Kozilek's Return is very good against Mardu Vehicles, and this is one of the few decks that can take advantage of the return part at instant-speed and with some amount of consistency. Lightning Axe and Fiery Temper both can shut down the Copy Cat combo, and Fevered Visions provides a ton of pressure against Four-Color and Temur Tower decks alike, as those decks often struggle to get cards out of their hands.

Throw in some generally resilient threats like a few Skaabs and a Prized Amalgam, and you have a deadly recipe for the current Standard metagame.
