Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on March 28, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Amonkhet Invocations, coming to you starting at 3 p.m. PT/6 p.m. ET.

Today's Must

  1. How to Teach Magic: The Gathering (or any game) | Gathering Magic | Morgan Wentworth

With Magic Open House coming up as a good way to get a friend started and teach them the game, Wentworth uses her experience to help you learn how to help others learn how to play Magic. Simple.

What to Watch Today

  1. Team and Streamer Masterpiece Preview Extrabonanza!

In case you missed this announcement yesterday, a bunch of Pro Tour Team Series teams and some Magic streamers will be showing off some Amonkhet Invocations (what the Masterpiece Series is called this set) starting at 3 p.m. PT/6 p.m. ET.

We'll show off the (nearly) full set of Masterpieces tomorrow, but checking out these teams and streams will be the best way to see them early.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Amonkhet Spoilers: Archfiend of Ifnir, Oracle's Vault, Glorybringer, New Mechanics, and more | The Mana Source | Wedge

We dropped a bunch of news yesterday—you might even say, we dropped so much news—that, of course, several YouTubers jumped on it. Wedge was just one of a few. Dev at StrictlyBetterMTG also covered the news, as did MTGGoldfish, for example. In fact, MTGGoldfish's entry is apparently the first of a new series of preview card reaction videos they'll be doing going forward. So if you're looking for all of yesterday's news in video form, check out the video below and the others linked above.

  1. From Laying Bricks to the Hall of Fame | First Strike | Kar Yung Tom, Robert Lombardi, Bryan Gottlieb, and Vince D'Agnostino

Days like yesterday are candy for Magic talk shows, and the First Strike crew takes advantage. They go over pretty much all the Amonkhet news from yesterday, spending time on the mechanics and new cards. But they then veer another direction to talk about whether the Hall of Fame is what it once was—or what it was meant to be.

  1. The Rising Sun: Deckwatch Vol.3 | Hareruya English | Atsushi Ito

Ito's Deckwatch column is basically "check out these crazy, creative decks, yo," but with less "yo" and more "creative." I mean, there's an Eater of Days deck in here—and it actually put up results at a tournament. It doesn't get much more creative than that.

  1. MOCS Draft Analysis | Pantheon Magic | Tom Guevin

There are mounds of data in here and tons of analysis. This is not for the faint of heart nor for people who don't enjoy parsing through a bunch of numbers. But for those who do, this is candy in analyzing the Aether Revolt-Kaladesh Draft format.

  1. JUSTICE | Ancestral Recall | Mike Flores and Roman Fusco

What does luck mean in a game like Magic and how do you frame it when it works against you? Or, heck, for you? There's even a neat chart to illustrate! But if the topic interests you, you might as well just listen to the whole podcast, which clocks in at a mere 47 minutes.

Community Spotlight

Fair warning from the Egyptologist herself, because—wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. Magic has a wide and diverse fan base, so of course we have an Egyptologist among our fans. @Rudjedet (Sonja Greer) has been sharing some initial thoughts on Amonkhet (and there will likely be more), but that isn't what her account is all about. But, hey, if you really like Egypt, then you're in for a treat following her! Still, some of her insights on Amonkhet have been fun to read so far. Amonkhet isn't "Egypt, but on Magic cards," but more along the lines of a Magic twist on Egyptian themes. So, for example, there are no Dragons in Egypt (obviously), but Greer sees making the Dragons Magic has in the set appear crocodilian as a big plus.

Anyway, it's interesting stuff if you want to see the connections between ancient Egypt and Amonkhet.

What People Are Talking About

Not to mention Walking Ballista!

We caught a sneak peek into some of the cards coming in Amonkhet with the Welcome Deck reveals yesterday, and Sixth Sense, the update to Keen Sense, was one of them.

Deck of the Day

  1. Blue-Red Colossus

It takes a brave person to play an artifact-based deck in a world where Heart of Kiran puts a hard target on all artifacts, but Richard Mellors did just that at a six-round PPTQ where he made the Top 8 with Blue-Red Colossus, a deck that has had spurts of popularity, but never really broken through.

The deck utilizes a ton of artifacts and cost-reducers to quickly power out a Metalwork Colossus and, well, that's the main game plan. Giant 11/11s are pretty much a plan on their own.

But the deck utilizes several backup plans. Elder Deep-Fiend takes advantage of all the extra mana and random Glint-Nest Cranes sitting around. Skysovereign, Consul Flagship serves as removal as well as supplying nearly half the cost of a Metalwork Colossus—and often being crewed by a newly cast one. Heck, even Cultivator's Caravan gets in on some attacking action.

Note the red removal in the main deck, which keeps Vehicles in check long enough to bust out and can disrupt Copy Cat long enough to attack with giant machines.
