The April 4, 2017 Update

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on April 4, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Cast Out and Drake Haven, the early leads in the race to get mentioned every other Update because I have become obsessed with them, also known as the Panharmonicon/Cloudblazer memorial trophy.

Today's Previews

Every day for the next two weeks, I'll be sharing all the non-DailyMTG previews you can find around the web in this space. Here are today's:

  1. Amonkhet Previews: Cast Out and Drake Haven | ChannelFireball | Caleb Durward

This pair of cards has Caleb abuzz with the idea that there might be a new archetype waiting in the wings. Could a blue-white cycling deck take flight based on this pair?

  1. Kefnet the Mindful |

Straight from Japan, the blue God flies into our minds . . . and hearts.

As for a translation, this one looks pretty accurate.

  1. Sacred Cat and its token

He's a good kitty. (It's a he because it looks very much like my cat, Pepper. The card, not the Zombie Cat token.)

  1. Prepare to Fight | Local language DailyMTG | Tobi Henke

This is what I said before every Friday Night Magic match I ever played. So now they don't let me play FNM anymore.

  1. Lay Bare the Heart | Riot Pixels

Another powerful discard spell to add to black's arsenal. Let's do the math. There are 16,391 cards legal in Vintage. Of those, 572 are lands and 784 are Legendary, and 40 are both. That means the hit rate on this card across all legal Magic cards is nearly 92%, just a touch worse than Thoughtseize at 95%. Not bad. Also, math.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. YouTube Preview Videos

When it comes to keeping up with previews, two YouTube channels in particular are prolific, putting out a new video virtually every day of preview season: The Mana Source and MTGGoldfish. If you want to keep up with everything in video form, those are good channels to follow.

You can check out their videos from yesterday here.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Vintage Super League Finals | | 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET/midnight UTC

Only four players remain in the Vintage Super League, and one will be crowned tonight. But don't take my word for it, read this helpful tweet!

What People Are Talking About

  1. The rules on CMC of split cards are changing with Amonkhet

We'll be posting an official update shortly. Like, the next thing after this goes live.

We all mourn in our own ways.

Edit: This has now been published!

Really proud of the work our marketing team did on this one. It's not as easy as you would think to line up a major archeological find with the first day of previews but, hey, it was worth it.

(Please note: We actually had nothing to do with this. It was sheer, fantastic coincidence.)

Deck of the Day

  1. Black-Red Zombies

So, we know Amonkhet is bringing some Zombies with it and we know there will be creatures that turn into Zombie tokens (embalm) from the graveyard. Hmm, if only we had a graveyard-focused Zombie deck waiting to . . . oh, what's this?! Exactly the thing I was just describing! How weird.

Matt Megaw finished 5th at a Invitational Qualifier with this list, and it's pretty close to the stock list prior to Amonkhet. Haunted Dead, Cryptbreaker, and Voldaren Pariah all make excellent discard outlets for creatures with embalm, and Insolent Neonate is certainly replaceable. This deck would also make a ton of sense being headed by Hazoret the Fervent, the recently revealed red God.
