Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on June 5, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Brad Nelson, who has apparently decided to win every tournament he enters.

What You Might Have Missed This Weekend

  1. Top Stories of Grand Prix Manilla 2017 | Wizards of the Coast | Chapman Sim
  2. Top Stories of Grand Prix Amsterdam | Wizards of the Coast | Frank Karsten
  3. Top Stories of Grand Prix Omaha | Wizards of the Coast | Corbin Hosler

These are your three fast and easy catch-up-on-the-weekend pieces that will, well, catch you up on the three Standard Grand Prix this weekend. For an even deeper dive, you can check out the video replays of Amsterdam and Omaha on our Twitch video archive. You can see action like an 80-power Electrostatic Pummeler stealing a win out of nowhere or Nahiri searching up a Skysovereign, Consul Flagship to decimate the board.

I want to highlight two stories in particular. One, Brad Nelson won his second large tournament in a row, one week after winning the Modern Open in Baltimore. It's an astounding feat and one that shows Brad's at the top of his game right now.

Two, Nelson was one of two members of team Genesis to win a Grand Prix this weekend! Lukas Blohon might have been playing a different deck (Nelson was on Temur Marvel and Blohon was on Black-Green Delirium), but two teammates winning Grand Prix multiple time zones away from one another on the same weekend is exceedingly difficult to do.

  1. Magic's Best Worst Card | TheMagicManSam

An ode to One with Nothing, a spell that, to this day, still causes players to scratch their head over its one line of text: Discard your hand.

  1. Amonkhet Review Review | Limited Resources | Marshall Sutcliffe and Luis Scott-Vargas

Present Marshall and LSV review the work of past Marshall and LSV and let them know how terrible they were at judging Amonkhet. Past Marshall and LSV don't respond, because that's not how time works.

Today's Must

  1. Archenemy: Nicol Bolas with Gavin Verhey | Game Knights #7 | Command Zone | Jimmy Wong and Josh Lee Kwai

Watch what happens when Gavin Verhey visits Game Knights to assume the mantle of Nicol Bolas—a crown he wears well—while battling Jimmy, Josh, and Mel Li as the unlucky Gatewatch members trying to battle him using the upcoming Archenemy: Nicol Bolas.

Community Spotlight

  1. Commander Time! | Nate Burgess, Dean Gootee, and Patrick Sippola

From one of the former hosts of Commanderin' MTG (that would be Burgess) comes a new weekly Commander podcast called Commander Time! It's very new (just four videos in one-week's worth of content), but the podcasts come with a little something extra—catchy songs.

What People Are Talking About

We've shown off bits of this cosplay as it was nearing completion, so I thought we certainly had to show it off once it was finished!

Also, what timing!

Clearly going to Vegas is better, but if you can't, this is an amusing way to share in your collective sadness over not being able to go.

Deck of the Day

  1. Brad Nelson's Temur Marvel

All weekend, the question was "How much Marvel will there be?" at the three Grand Prix this weekend. There was a lot, but as the weekend moved on, the deck appeared less successful at first. Grand Prix Manilla and Grand Prix Amsterdam, which finished first and second respectively, had very little Marvel in the Top 8 (the Top 32 was a different story). Then Grand Prix Omaha flipped the script and featured a Top 8 that was virtually all Marvel decks—including winner Brad Nelson.

Now the community holds its collective breath until June 14. Will Marvel get banned? Will Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger leave to make Marvel activations more fair? Or will nothing change?

For Brad Nelson, all he really cares about right now is that he picked up another Grand Prix Trophy. Congratulations, Brad!
