Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on June 9, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by smooth jazz.

What to Watch This Weekend

  1. Charlotte Open | | 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET/2 p.m. UTC

Modern gets the spotlight this weekend, with more Death's Shadow surely on tap, but a wide variety of decks looking to make sure it doesn't win another week. Also looking to win another week? Brad Nelson. I have no idea if he's going to be there, but if he is, we'll be watching to see if he can make it three tournaments in three weekends.

  1. Next Level Games | | 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET/5 p.m. UTC

Next Level Games is a store in Tennessee that will be streaming both its Last Chance Qualifier and Regional Pro Tour Qualifier this Saturday. It's a rare peek into this level of events, so don't hesitate to check it out.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. How is Magic: The Gathering Like Jazz? | PBS Idea Channel

I didn't learn much about Magic from this video, but I suddenly completely understand Jazz.

You know one of the writers or producers for this video—which is super interesting and very slickly produced—is definitely a Magic player because there's an "assemble a contraption" joke in there.

  1. The Art of the Magic Trailer | Hipsters of the Coast | Beck Holden

I think this is the first piece of content I've ever found that looked back at previous trailers. It's kind of fun. Holden picks his top 5 and expresses his hope for an Hour of Devastation trailer (hint: it's coming next week).

  1. The Best of the Best | Gathering Magic | Ben Friedman

Lists! You know I'm a sucker for them. Reading them, debating them, questioning the author's criteria for them—all the things! Friedman has a fun one, listing the best one-drops, the best planeswalkers, and the most underrated Legacy cards.

  1. Why White-Blue Flash is the Best Standard Deck | MTG Mint Card | Chapman Sim

What month is it? Didn't we go through this in January or so? Has White-Blue Flash—which just won Grand Prix Manilla in a thrilla'—really ascended to the top of the metagame?

  1. One Thoughtseize | Dex Army | Lucas Berthoud

If you're going to be watching any Modern this weekend, check out Berthoud's excellent piece on a single Thoughtseize decision to look at the many branching decision trees that can result from just a single "Thoughtseize you."

What People Are Talking About

Plus a Magic Digital announcement on Tuesday! Read all about it here.

  1. SaffronOlive takes all the turns.

Or at least enough of them. This was one of the most popular Twitch Clips from yesterday as SaffronOlive streamed his Modern Bant Turns deck. You can check out the article detailing the deck, complete with videos, here.

Deck of the Day

  1. Sunrakasha's 1v1 Commander Zurgo Bellstriker

They said it couldn't be done. They said 30 life was too high. Magic Online player Sunrakasha didn't listen, grabbed 27 Mountains, and burned everything in his path on the way to a 5-0 finish in Magic Online 1v1 Commander Leagues. It helps when you can start every game with a 1-mana 2/2.

In a world where blue decks and four-color decks are the norm, it was only a matter of time before someone broke through with a mono-colored aggressive deck. And Zurgo is easily the best red choice for that description (sorry, Norin, the Wary).
