The June 15, 2017 Update

By Nicholas Wolfram

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on June 15, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by DINOSAURS. (Pre)historically accurate, feathered dinosaurs!

Today's Must

  1. Magic: The Gathering—Official License Unlocked! | Wyrmwood Game Supplies | Eric Dupuis

Wizards has partnered with Wyrmwood Game Supplies to bring the world some outstandingly high-quality wood deck boxes and leather playmats. These are the first ever official leather playmats and are available in extremely limited quantities, so get your hands on these while you can and bring some serious style to your next Friday Night Magic.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Cheating on Mana Costs | | Emma Handy

Emma believes that you can't thrive in Modern without finding creative ways to get around mana costs. She has quite the case, too; she'll take you through every top Modern deck and show you how they've been skirting mana costs and finding their own ways to get ahead of the curve.

  1. MTG Top 10: Horrors | Aether Hub | Nizzahon

Horrors are one of my favorite creature types in Magic based solely on their art, but they always seem very underappreciated. However, Nizzahon is doing his best to bring them the appreciation they have earned over the years. And he's doing it purely through data, which is fantastic.

  1. The Game Before the Game | Hipsters of the Coast | Chantelle Campbell

Facing down some of the best players in the world is going to be stressful and often intimidating. And that's exactly what everyone on their way to Grand Prix Vegas is about to do. Fortunately, Chantelle has some great advice on how to relieve a bit of that stress and make the experience more pleasure than pain.

  1. It Isn't Always About 2-for-1s—8 Ways to Generate Virtual Card Advantage | Channel Fireball | Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa

There are many ways to create card advantage over your opponent, whether it's quantifiable or just perceived, but many people often only consider two-for-ones. Paulo has tapped into his expertise and outlined eight other ways to get ahead.

  1. A Guide to Vizier Knightfall | MTG Mint Card | Kelvin Chew

With Grand Prix Vegas coming this weekend, players are scrambling to get ahead of the Modern metagame and climb their way to the Top 8. Kelvin has been tinkering with Knightfall to crack open the metagame across his knee. By splashing red into his normal Bant build and adding in Amonkhet's combo-loving Vizier of Remedies, he may have just found a way.

  1. The Time Value of Magic Cards | | Jadine Klomparens

Jadine has a lot to say about a concept many of us take for granted: the sooner you can play a card, the more advantage you can get out of it. Now, obviously it's more nuanced than that. Which is exactly why she wrote an article about it, so you should read it.

What People Are Talking About

This has been a great week for Dinosaur nerds who are also big fans of Magic (like me).

Deck of the Day

  1. Dubious Challenge Combo

That's right. Dubious Challenge, the card that you made fun of every time it wheeled around the table at your Kaladesh draft, is actually doing things. Jhon Middlebrook used the ridiculous card in combination with flicker effects to make the Top 16 at Classic Modern Charlotte this past weekend. While it may have other win-cons built in, who cares? Dubious Challenge! Maybe we'll even see it make another splash this weekend at Grand Prix Vegas.
