The June 26, 2017 Update

Posted in Daily Magic Update on June 26, 2017

By Nicholas Wolfram

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on June 26, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Sweltering Suns, which apparently is already the official card of the summer. Stay hydrated, everyone!

Today's Previews

  1. Ammit Eternal | Team Mint

Baleful Ammit was one of my favorite go-to picks in Amonkhet Limited. I'm psyched to see these lovely Crocodile Demons return for another round. On the other hand, seeing a 2B 5/5 brings me back to when I started playing Magic and I would often be facing a Phyrexian Negator on turn one. Oh, and if you don't speak Japanese, be sure to check out the translation on this handy Reddit thread.

  1. Refuse // Cooperate | Tolarian Community College | The Professor

More aftermath goodness! And a surprisingly modern video from The Professor.

  1. Unraveling Mummy | Izzet MTG News

Another tool for the White-Black Zombies toolbox!

  1. God-Pharaoh's Gift | Commanderin' | Phil DeLuca and Sean Whatson

As teased in today's Making Magic article, God-Pharaoh's Gift is what awaits the people of Amonkhet from the other side of the Gate to the Afterlife. Needless to say, it is not what any of them expected.

  1. More previews to come

Keep an eye on NumottheNummy's Twitch channel and the First Strike podcast (streaming live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT!) for more previews today.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. 6 Ingredients of a Functional Combo Deck | MTG Mint Card | Simon Nielsen

There's a lot more to building a combo deck than just shoving four of each piece of the combo into a deck and trying to pop the combo off. Nielson has information on the other ingredients to the recipe.

  1. A Guide to Temur Energy for the New Standard | Channel Fireball | Ondřej Stráský

Standard Temur Energy decks have been oscillating between tier 1 and 2 since the release of Kaladesh last fall, and it doesn't look like that's going to change with the release of Hour of Devastation. Stráský has everything you need to know to keep this archetype relevant in the new metagame.

  1. Having Pride in the Magic Community | Hipsters of the Coast | Rich Stein

Like today's Card of the Day says, we have a lot of pride in our community. And we hope you do, too.

What People Are Talking About

  1. What's the weirdest win condition you run?

The best kind of jank is jank that wins you the game. As a big fan of jank, this topic is basically why I play Magic. I also feel like I need to say jank more here, so here it goes: jank.

Deck of the Day

  1. William Jensen's Blue-Black Cycling

Amonkhet Limited is home to several powerful built-in archetypes, but Blue-Black Cycling is not one that is easy to pilot (even though it is home to many fliers, which pilots should be familiar with). William Jensen's adept piloting skills allowed him to take following deck to victory over the weekend at Grand Prix Cleveland as he—along with teammates Owen Turtenwald and Reid Duke—soared over the competition.
