By Nicholas Wolfram

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on July 27, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by a Pro Tour from the future!

Today's Must

  1. Pro Tour Hour of Devastation

That's right: we'll be streaming Pro Tour action live from the future! The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. Friday morning in Kyoto, Japan—which translates to 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET/midnight UTC tonight. Tune in to to see how the pros shake up Standard!

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. 10 Cards to Beat Mono-Red | TCGPlayer | Adam Yurchick

Everyone seems to think that Mono-Red Aggro is the deck to beat this Pro Tour, which means it probably is. And based on the case Adam makes here, it is an absolute possibility. At this point, I would say its success hinges on how much people build their decks around planning to destroy it.

  1. Top 7 Decks in Hour of Devastation Standard | MTG Mint Card | Freyalise

Here are seven decks that you will likely be seeing over this weekend. They are likely decks you've been hearing about over the past weeks, but there is one deck creating a bit of buzz that isn't mentioned here, which is . . .

  1. White-Blue God-Pharaoh's Gift | ChannelFireball | Josh Silvestri

After snagging a surprise win in the most recent Magic Online Pro Tour Qualifier, this deck is starting to look like it may be a legitimate contender in the current Standard meta.

  1. Sphinxes in Standard | | Matt Higgs

Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign may be an obvious contender for an excellent new commander, but does he have any Standard viability? Matt explores a couple decks in which he may be able to make some cryptic board states happen.

  1. A Quick Peek at Hour of Devastation Standard | MTG Mint Card | Chapman Sim

With a metagame still emerging, the list of decks that could be breakaway winners is surprisingly long. Chapman covers a few of the more commonly discussed decks along with a few dark horses in the Pro Tour race.

  1. You Need to Know Every Trick and Removal Spell in Hour of Devastation Limited | ChannelFireball | Neal Oliver

With such a short and vague title, this article is a mystery that you'll need to open to solve. But it's definitely not wrong, so you should probably do that.

What People Are Talking About

  1. The Gatewatch (sans Ajani) takes a trip to Italy

After yesterday's confrontation with Nicol Bolas, it seems the Gatewatch decided they needed a trip, so they met up with Nahiri in Italy. Apparently Sorin was supposed to make it as well, but Nahiri said he was exploring the interior of some castle walls.

Deck of the Day

  1. Allen Sun's 2nd-Place Grand Prix Toronto Deck

When you get to stick an Archfiend of Ifnir into your -1/-1 Counters deck during pack three, your draft is probably going pretty well. Splashing blue for The Scarab God is just the icing on the cake here, so it shouldn't be any surprise that Allen was able to snag second place in Toronto last weekend.
