Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on August 24, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Commander (2017 Edition), which releases tomorrow!

Today's Must

  1. Runeaxe Giants | Hipsters of the Coast | Ryan Sainio

Hey, if you want to build a different tribal deck to take on all of the Wizards, Vampires, Dragons, and Cats that are going to be springing up starting around this time tomorrow, you do you. Even if "you" is taking an obscure Legends card as your commander and surrounding them with Giants.

"Can't be the target of enchant creature spells." Take that, Control Magic! You won't be stealing my 6/5 vigilant creature today!

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. The Best Five-Color Dragon Ever? Commander 2017 Dragon Deck Review | The Command Zone | Josh Lee Kwai and Jimmy Wong

Jimmy and Josh update the C17 Dragons deck with a metric ton of Ur-puns.

  1. Cubing with Hour of Devastation and Commander 2017 | Gathering Magic | Usman Jamil

Jamil looks at Cube updates from both the latest set and the very next one, since Commander 2017 releases tomorrow, just in case we hadn't told you that one already.

  1. First Banned Cards in MTG History (1994) – Banned and Restricted | Aether Hub | Nizzahon Magic

We've got a scheduled B&R announcement coming up on Monday, which means we're going to start seeing some reflections on historical B&R announcements and theories on what will happen with this announcement. This is the former.

  1. Cohesive Deck Building | | Emma Handy

As the first line of the article says, Standard is in a great place right now—but that just means you have to be more thoughtful and intentional in your deck choice and design. Handy shows you how.

  1. Standard Power Rankings | ChannelFireball

Who knew that one day little Longtusk Cub would be the format-defining staple it is today? Or that Trophy Mage would be a key cog in one of Standard's coolest decks? Or that Glorybringer would—oh, yeah, we all knew about that one.

  1. Importance of Choosing a Simple Deck | Hareruya English | Pierre Dagen

Getting fancy doesn't earn you any extra points at a tournament, though it can earn you fake internet points. Dagen tells you why the former is better and why you should avoid the trap of playing the more complex deck.

What People Are Talking About

Ravnica Flashback Drafts started yesterday on Magic Online, which means more nostalgia coming out of the woodwork. Locking people out with Vedalken Dismisser and Mark of Eviction is one sadistic favorite, but I have my own.

It's like Kess is cycling through the potions asking, "Which way am I going to beat my opponent today?" I dig that general sentiment.

Deck of the Day

  1. Against the Odds: Grixis Gods (Standard) | MTGGoldfish | SaffronOlive

The Gods must be crazy . . . powerful or this deck won't work. SaffronOlive plays the "How many Gods can we reasonably put in one deck?" game and comes out on top.
