Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on August 31, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Magic: The Gathering Arena. Your first look is finally coming.

Mark Your Calendars

Judging by the number of emails I've received about this stream just today, this might be the biggest Magic news ever. Or at least since Monday. Tune in to the stream on at 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET/8 p.m. UTC to see the first look at Magic: The Gathering Arena. Not only will you get a new look at the next Magic digital product, but we'll have Ixalan previews to sweeten the deal.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Cult of the Fair Magic Card | Gathering Magic | April King

April talks "fair" Magic cards, and then reveals a totally "fair" Magic Online promo. The article is "worth reading." Shoot, no, that's the wrong way to use "quotes." "Crap." That's also "wrong."

  1. Listener Q&A Episode | Limited Resources | Marshall Sutcliffe and Luis Scott-Vargas

You have questions, they have puns. Also answers. Probably.

  1. Vraska, Nicol Bolas – PIRATES! – Ixalan Spoilers/Lore Speculation | Aether Hub | Seiben

Seiben starts guessing what the Ixalan story might have, um, in store. He is exactly 47.3% correct. Or I made that number up. You decide.

  1. Draft Digest: Ixnay on the Ixalan-Ay | | Ryan Saxe

We've barely started previews, and already Saxe is talking Limited. He discusses four revealed mechanics and how those will impact how you draft the set. Eventually. When it comes out.

  1. The Ixalan Rotation: What We Lose from Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon | ChannelFireball | Joel Larsson

We're going to be getting a bunch of these as we get closer to rotation (heck, we did one just the other day), but I find that each one digs up something a little different or takes a different angle.

  1. Ixalan's Impact | Hareruya English | Jeremy Dezani

Speaking of those kinds of articles, this is easily the most extensive, covering basically everything that's seen play from Battle for Zendikar block and Shadows over Innistrad block, all in handy picture form. Plus, he highlights what's leaving from what decks.

If you want even more of these, Frank Karsten did it by grouping two days ago.

  1. Cardhoarder Podcast Episode 68 w/ Gerry Thompson | Cardhoarder

It gets personal, it gets professional, it gets honest, and it gets nostalgic. Worth an hour of your time to get another look at the life of a Pro Tour Champion.

What to Watch Today

Old tweet, but new stream. Happy Almost Birthday, Gaby. It's probably happening right now, so go celebrate and get a look at some upcoming Magic Online promo cards.

Deck of the Day

  1. Blue-Black Metallurgic Pyramid

Sunset Pyramid has been something of a secret star in more controlling Hour of Devastation Draft decks, so it's not shocking to see someone try it out in Standard. It's even less surprising that that someone is Zac Elsik, creator of the Modern Lantern deck and all-around offbeat deck brewer.

This one isn't that offbeat, as many have tried Metallurgic Summonings before. But what makes this one neat (beyond the Sunset Pyramids) is that the main deck is virtually rotation-proof. Of the non-lands, just Grasp of Darkness is leaving us. The deck does lose Choked Estuary and Sunken Hollow from its mana base, but picks up Drowned Catacomb in Ixalan to help compensate. Everything else stays, which means we could be demolishing Pyramids in Standard for quite some time.
