The September 1, 2017 Update

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on September 1, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Pirates vs. Dinosaurs.

Also, a note. Monday is a holiday in the United States, so there won't be a Daily Magic Update. There will, however, be normal articles—and previews start in earnest on Monday as well. Enjoy!

What to Watch This Weekend

  1. Grand Prix Turin/Grand Prix Washington, DC, Viewing Extrabonanza | | Saturday 1 a.m. PT/4 a.m. ET/8 a.m. UTC

So here's what's going on. Grand Prix Turin and Grand Prix Washington, DC, are sending Standard out in style. We'll start with Turin, because they live slightly more in the future, and then once coverage of Turin wraps, we'll throw to the crew in Washington, DC, for basically round-the weekend coverage of two Standard Grand Prix. Monday is a holiday in the US—might as well use the weekend to watch all of the Magic.

  1. Exploring Ixalan: A Look Inside Magic: The Gathering and the Best Worlds in Fantasy Gaming | | Saturday, 1:30 p.m. PT/4:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. UTC

To answer your first question—yes, there will be preview cards. To answer your second question, yes, the Twitch channel is pax3. Make sure you get that 3 in there. If you're on-site at PAX, these panels are taking place in the Wyvern Theater. Panelists will include Franchise Creative Director Jeremy Jarvis, Senior Art Director Cynthia Shepard, Senior Game Designer James Wyatt, and artist Tyler Jacobson.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. The Mechanics of Ixalan: Explore, Raid, Enrage, Vehicles, and Double-Faced Cards | ChannelFireball | Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa

PVDDR explores Ixalan (I'm going to be using that one a lot). And since he's No.-1-in-the-world-Player-of-the-Year-Hall-of-Fame-Pro Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa, that should be enough to get you interested.

  1. Ixalan! | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin

The title is certainly to the point. Flores and Chapin talk previews thus far and, naturally, compare everything to cards that came before. There's even a Gnarled Mass reference!

  1. Commander 2017 Design with Gavin Verhey pt 1 | Commanderin' | Phil DeLuca, Sean Whatson, and Shivam Bhatt

I know we're all excited about Ixalan, but Commander (2017 Edition) did just come out. Gavin Verhey—he makes Magic cards, don't ya know?—talks about the design of the latest Commander decks and also about why Wizards are the best. Maybe not that last part. But maybe.

  1. Planeswalker Rule and You | Gathering Magic | Ali Aintrazi

We didn't just get new cards this week—we also got an updated planeswalker rule, which is just that they function like legendary everything now. Aintrazi dives in to what that means across all formats. There are a number of surprising implications in here.

Community Spotlight

This spotlight is meant not for Eric Froehlich's good work—though that's great too!—but to point to Play It Forward, a non-profit dedicated to promoting and cultivating women at the highest levels of Magic play. Part of that, as you can see from Efro's tweet, involves mentorships with current pros. It's a cool group and one worthy of the spotlight. You are too, Eric.

What People Are Talking About

A small discussion broke out late yesterday about whether awarding byes to pros was a good thing or not. Despite what you may assume, a large number of pros came out and said byes shouldn't be awarded at Grand Prix, except through winning trials and the like. If you're terribly interested in this, start the thread here.

Several different Magic Online promos were previewed by various streamers around the web yesterday, and they all looked gorgeous. That means we get art tweets! Here, Anna Steinbauer shows off a haunting Elvish Spirit Guide so pretty you'll want to cast it for 2G just to make sure it stays in play.

Deck of the Day

  1. Approach of the Second Sun

With Temur Energy out in full force this weekend, it could be a good time for Fumigate and, as a result, a good time for the Approach of the Second Sun. The deck has put up results here and there, and with two Grand Prix this weekend, we could see one of them grab an elusive Top 8. The list below went 5-0 in a Competitive Standard Constructed League in the hands of GriffGriff, so it's certainly possible to run through a gauntlet filled with Temur.

The deck itself is not great against control decks like Blue-Red Control, so its success might vary based on how many Torrential Gearhulks show themselves this weekend. After all, resolving a seven-mana sorcery is no easy feat.
