The September 12, 2017 Update

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on September 12, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by crudely forcing every one of your Draft decks to be Dinosaur tribal for the next six months. Or for you reasonable players, continuing to draft like a sane person.

Today's Must

  1. Ixalan Limited: First Look at Dinosaurs | | Ryan Saxe

Reading the table and sliding into open colors is the proper way to draft effectively and demonstrate sound strategy. And this is surely what Ryan would recommend to anyone looking for good Ixalan Draft advice. However, who cares about sound strategy when you can try to force DINOSAURS into every single one of your Draft decks?! Be warned, potential tablemates: this is exactly what I will be doing. Every time.

Today's Previews

  1. Imperial Lancer | CNEWS Matin | CNEWS Matin

Qu'est-ce que c'est?! Une lancière sur un dinosaure?! Yes, that is a lancer of the Sun Empire riding into battle on the back of an armored Dinosaur (I'm never going to get tired of Ixalan's flavor), so it makes sense that it gets double strike as long as you control a Dinosaur for it to ride.

  1. Vicious Conquistador and Makeshift Munitions | First Strike Podcast | Robert Lombardi, Kar Yung Tom, and Vince D'Agostino

This is a nice pair of aggressive and flavorful uncommons. Firing Pirate Treasure out of a cannon at your opponent's face is yet another Ixalan win.

  1. Dire Fleet Ravager | Gathering Magic | Ali Aintrazi

I'm glad this is mythic rare, because that's not the kind of thing I want to be facing down during too many Limited matches.

After Those, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Updating Standard with Ixalan (Part 1) | MTG Mint Card | Zen Takahashi

While everyone is excited to try out the new archetypes we'll be seeing with Ixalan, Zen is careful not to dismiss the foundation already in place. Here are his first thoughts on updating the decks currently leading the Standard metagame once Ixalan stampedes into the format.

  1. Buffing Beckett Brass | TCGplayer| Bruce Richard

It's pretty clear that Epic Pirate Mom is going to be among Ixalan's best mom cards, so it should be of no surprise that people have already started brewing some great decks with her. If nothing else, Admiral Beckett Brass will serve as a great foster mom for fifteen-year-old runaway Kari Zev, the first legendary Pirate we saw this year.

  1. Opt to the Races! | ChannelFireball | Rachel Agnes

Rachel takes an objective look at one of Ixalan's hottest reprints so far and evaluates it across multiple formats. All I know is that you can expect to see a lot of this in Standard decks over the next two years.

  1. Approaching Ixalan Standard | MTG Mint Card | Lee Shi Tian

Now that preview season is over half over, Lee feels comfortable evaluating what the new Standard environment might look like once Ixalan rotates in and Battle for Zendikar, Oath of the Gatewatch, Shadows over Innistrad, and Eldritch Moon rotate out.

What People Are Talking About

  1. The Magic Nationals

The Magic 2017 Nationals started this past weekend and will continue over the next month, so naturally people have been discussing the current and future winners who will be representing countries around the world.

Deck of the Day

  1. Tomáš Langer's Green-White Ramp

Tomáš combined Approach of the Second Sun and massive Eldrazi to create a Green-White Ramp deck with a few roads to victory. The branching strategy paid off for him, and he was able to claim 1st place at the Czech Nationals over the weekend.
