The September 19, 2017 Update

By Nicholas Wolfram

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on September 19, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by crab people.

Today's Must

  1. Ixalan Limited Set Review: White | ChannelFireball | Luis Scott-Vargas

So begins another round of LSV's classic article series reviewing the Limited environments of new sets. Fortunately, the color pie begins with one of the three Dinosaur colors, so we can get his first impressions of Dinosaur picks.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Upgrading Vampires with Ixalan | TCGplayer | Bruce Richard

Vampire Commander just got a few fantastic new tools with Commander (2017 Edition) and Edgar Markov. However, with this new move into Mardu (red-white-black), white was the one color of Edgar lagging behind in the Vampire department. Now, almost like we planned this or something, Ixalan block is delivering a whole armada of white (and white-black) Vampires!

  1. The Top 5 Best Modern Ixalan Cards | Tolarian Community College | The Professor

Spoilers: Yes, his number 1 is Opt. If you're surprised at all, then enjoy your first video by The Professor!

  1. Wild Research: Ixalan Review | MTG Mint Card | Hapless Researcher

While everyone else is doing their dead-serious evaluations of Ixalan cards, this researcher offers a more light-hearted perspective. Although occasionally serious. I guess it depends on the card.

  1. Homarids Officially Declared Extinct | Good Gamery | FyrexianSurvivr

As a zoologist, it is always crushing news when I discover that an entire clade of animals has gone extinct. While I'm not completely familiar with Dominarian taxonomy, I can only assume that Homarids were at least a genus, which makes it all the more tragic. Farewell, beloved crab people. The only solace we have is that literally none of this is canonical.

  1. I Gishath an Idea | StarCityGames.com | Bennie Smith

Forced puns aside, it's absolutely time to begin the discussion of Dinosaur Commander, and this a great start.

  1. Buy-A-Box Promos | Blake Rasmussen

You may have noticed this article is almost three weeks old. You may also have noticed that you can't actually buy a box of Ixalan yet. However, you can preorder a box! And you should, because these promo reward are substantial.

Deck of the Day

  1. Autumn Burchett's Four-Color Energy

Okay, I know that says "four-color," but this is almost a completely Temur (green-blue-red) build with just the splashiest splash of black for a one-of The Scarab God (plus three sideboard cards). Regardless of what you call it, this is the deck that helped Autumn Burchett become the reigning National Champion of England, going undefeated across an unbelievable fifteen matches. Congratulations, Autumn!
