The September 21, 2017 Update

By Nicholas Wolfram

Nicholas Wolfram fell promptly in love with tabletop and video games when he was only two years old, and he has been writing about them since he figured out how words worked. Now he puts together words about Magic, which he started playing way back in 2000.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on September 21, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Ixalan Prerelease this weekend!

Today's Must

  1. Green-White, Dino-Might! | ChannelFireball | Brian DeMars

Outstanding title aside, this is a great dive into Green-White Dinosaurs. And in an environment where it often seems like everyone only wants to talk about Red-Green Dinosaurs, it's nice to see the white dinos of the set get the love they deserve.

After That, Read These

  1. The Verdict on Ixalan in Modern | TCGplayer | Adam Yurchick

Ever since Opt was previewed, there has been a lot of talk around the impact Ixalan will have on Modern. Now that the full set has been revealed, Adam is ready to deliver his judgment.

  1. Top 7 Bomb Rares of Ixalan | MTG Mint Card | Freyalise

When four out the seven cards in the list have the word "Dinosaur" on them, you know I'm gonna be happy.

  1. Lessons from the Ixalan Pre-Prerelease | StarCityGames.com | Emma Handy

Emma is currently in the soon-to-not-be-so-exclusive club of people who have already played in an Ixalan Prerelease, so her advice is probably worth taking. Not that you needed any extra reasons to be taking her advice.

Then Get Ready for Prerelease with These Videos

  1. Ixalan Prerelease Guide: Everything You Need to Know and Best Cards to Look For! | TheManaSource | Wedge

You can never have too many general Prerelease guides! And apparently "bring some granola or an apple" is more common advice than I would have ever thought. I'd recommend just bringing a hot plate or camping stove, cast iron pan, clarified butter, and grass-fed New York strip steak (make sure you salt it ahead of time!), but I guess I like to keep things simpler than some people.

  1. Top 8 Mistakes at a Prerelease | MTG: Young Mage | Rhino

He may be young, but that doesn't mean Rhino is inexperienced. This advice could save your deck from certain ruin. Don't make the math crazy!

  1. Top 10 WORST Rares in Ixalan Sealed! | Magic the Amateuring | Meghan Wolff and Maria Bartholdi

Magic just has too many formats for every rare you open to be an exciting Limited bomb. Here, Meghan and Maria discuss the top ten Ixalan cards they'd be happy to see in any format but Limited.

What People Are Talking About

  1. Ixalan Prerelease!

Finally, after months (arguably decades) of waiting, you'll be able to make a Magic deck full of Dinosaurs. Or maybe Pirates, Merfolk, or Vampires, if that's your thing. But probably Dinosaurs. Make sure you head out to your local store this weekend and join the fun!

Deck of the Day

  1. Colo13's Eldrazi Ramp

Yet another deck archetype that will be leaving Standard in short time. Fortunately, I believe a new creature type is coming in Ixalan to fill in for Eldrazi in a Standard ramp deck. I can't remember what it is off the top of my head, but I recall it being pretty exciting. So whatever it is, keep an eye out if ramp is your thing!
