The October 4, 2017 Update

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on October 4, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Admiral Beckett Brass. Because she made me say so.

Today's Must

  1. Commander VS: Ixalan Season Kickoff! | | Justin Parnell and Stephen Green

It's the first episode of a new season of Commander VS, and, as they so often do, the crew is kicking things off with the legends of the latest set. It's Gishath, Sun's Avatar vs. Tishana, Voice of Thunder vs. Admiral Beckett Brass vs. Vona, Butcher of Magan—and each deck is tribal themed. Watch to see who comes out on top—and it better be Tishana or Admiral Brass.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Preparation, Expectation, and Reconciliation: Lucas Berthoud's Journey to Worlds | | Lucas Berthoud

The Magic World Championship is this weekend. I know, right?! I'll be there watching Berthoud and 23 others vie for the title of World Champion and $100,000. Berthoud goes way back—like 1996 way back—to talk about his journey from someone who just loved coverage to someone on Magic's biggest stage.

  1. The Right Way to Netdeck | The Command Zone | Josh Lee Kwai and Jimmy Wong

Look, we all do it. There's a wealth of information out there, it's hard not to look at at least some of it. Like when you think you've got a sweet Nekusar, the Mindrazer deck, but you want to check to see if you missed something. Or you really want to build around Mairsil, the Pretender, but aren't sure where to start. It's not a bad thing—and Josh and Jimmy show you how to do it right in Commander.

  1. 4 Lessons from GP Providence | ChannelFireball | Riley Knight

What did we learn from Grand Prix Providence? Besides the fact that Rich Hagon puns are a national treasure, I mean.

  1. Commander Review: Ixalan Part 2 (Red, Green, Multicolor, Colorless, Lands) | MTGGoldfish | Tomer Abramovici

There was a part 1, so clearly there had to be a part 2. This is that part 2. It's long, it's thorough, and it's worth your time.

  1. Vampire Pirates Abound in This Gorgeous New Magic: The Gathering Art | io9 | James Whitbrook

In which io9 calls Ixalan "a beautiful mess of the internet's favorite things, blended together and pressed into a set of cards." I mean, all we really need are cats and memes and this is pretty spot on.

  1. Voice | Hipsters of the Coast | Levi Byrne

Byrne uses a recent Magic Story as a jumping-off point to discuss the concept of voice in Magic Story—and comes away feeling good about how the characters are differentiated and fleshed out in Ixalan.

What People Are Talking About

We're sad to see you go, Neal, but thanks for the many hours you gave us.

Mine too, except I actually get to go to this one. See you all on!

Deck of the Day

  1. Blue-Green Aggro Merfolk | | Joey Hoffer

Hoffer goes into deep detail about all the options for building an aggressive, tempo-oriented Merfolk deck for Standard. Like, real deep. So click on the link above to get his take, as there's pretty much nothing I can add to it. Except that the deck is awesome and he should feel awesome.
