- The Deadliest Uses for Hostage Taker | Top Level Podcast | Mike Flores and Patrick Chapin
Hostage Taker has quickly become the most talked-about Pirate on the high seas, and the Top Level guys take a look at its power in the current Standard format (where it conveniently shares colors with The Scarab God). They focus particularly on a Sultai brew that brings in Blossoming Defense to protect the Hostage Taker, all but guaranteeing that you'll get to untap with it in play, for the bargain-basement price of one green mana.
- Odds of Victory for All 24 Magic World Championship Competitors | Hipsters of the Coast | Rich Stein
Rich Stein weighs in with his take on each individual Worlds competitor's odds of victory. He's done his research, and the calculations are based on each player's specific strengths and history—but the great thing about Magic is that literally anything can happen. (Hey, you can't be totally sure a player won't turn into an actual dragon, okay?)
- An Introduction to Magic: The Gathering | Obilisk | Heather Tinsley
Have you ever wished it were easier to get friends into Magic? Not quite sure where to start selling them on such a big game even though you love it? Well, you might want to try sending them this article. Heather is a fairly new Magic player, and she breaks down the game from the perspective of someone who hasn't been playing since "Mono Artifact" was a card type. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and your friends might just get a taste of how much fun they could be having!
- Missed-alan | StarCityGames.com | Matt Higgs
While Ixalan cards haven't drastically altered the landscape of Standard yet, Matt thinks there are some cards and decks that are poised to break into the format's highest levels. Vona, Butcher of Magan is one such card, and as he points out, although you do have to pay a hefty 7 life for it, its ability to "tap and kill planeswalkers" is worth paying serious attention to.
- Week 1 of Ixalan Standard | ChannelFireball | Josh Silvestri
With a week of the new Standard format behind us and the World Championship kicking into gear, it's a great time to survey the metagame and speculate wildly (or in Josh's case, educatedly) about what decks will come out on top. One takeaway: between the continued pressure of Ramunap Red and the barrage of two-drops from Sultai Energy, the format looks fast. Control decks need to be ready with answers to the early threats, or they risk being run over.
- Under the Sea | Gathering Magic | Carlos Gutierrez
The song is already stuck in your head, isn't it? Anyway, Carlos examines the likelihood of a Merfolk tribal deck being a viable threat in Standard, and he's got me convinced that it's possible. Good tempo, a curve of evasive creatures, and a top end of Skysovereign, Consul Flagship or Tishana, Voice of Thunder sounds like a pretty solid game plan!
What People Are Talking About
This Twitter account (@RosewattaStone, heh) puts various Magic cards through several iterations of Google Translate, and the results are exactly as coherent as you would expect. I for one can't wait to see everyone doing the Monstrosaur Method at my next Magic dance party.
Deck of the Day
JoseCabezas's 5-0 list is particularly remarkable for its lack of a single copy of The Scarab God in the main deck. Also interesting is the inclusion of Vona, Butcher of Magan—apparently Vona's lifelink plus Angel of Invention and Gate to the Afterlife equates to enough life gain to make the cost payable. Plus, bringing back Angel of Invention as a 4/4 with God-Pharaoh's Gift feels like a pretty sweet deal.
