Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on October 10, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by #newwotcstaff.

Today's Must

  1. Tolarian Tutor: Learn to Be a Better Aggro Player in Magic: The Gathering | Tolarian Community College | The Professor

Wait, there's more to aggro than turning creatures sideways and smashing face?!

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. 4 Lessons from the Magic: The Gathering World Championship | ChannelFireball | Riley Knight

Lesson number five: a nearby coffee shop is key to heading to the East Coast for a week.

  1. Storm Fleet Aerialist | Muddy Colors | Jesper Ejsing

Ejsing goes through the process of painting this flying Pirate, remarking that this was one of the few pieces he did last year that he was happy with (because of perfectionism, not because of self-doubt).

  1. Give Us Cards | Magic the Amateuring | Maria Bartholdi and Meghan Wolff

So these two cover Worlds, hop on a plane, and are immediately back to the podcasting? Impressive. Here they go behind the scenes at the World Championship while playing their host of strange games.

  1. MTG Beta Booster 57 Opened! Let's rip a pack and get basic lands! | OpenBoosters

I don't normally post booster opening videos, but people don't normally open Limited Edition (Beta) Black Lotus on camera.

Oh, and he also got some basic lands.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Vintage Super League | | 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET/midnight UTC

Did that sweet booster opening make you interested in watching some Vintage? Hoping to see someone Stone Giant some folks? Or maybe hold the ground with Drudge Skeletons? Shatter? No? It was the Black Lotus, wasn't it?

Whatever works. Vintage Super League rolls on tonight.

What People Are Talking About

We did a thing yesterday where we banned a bunch of tutors in 1v1 Commander. The internet rejoiced. But it's the internet, so they also had to question why we took so long and what our mothers have been up to. We'll take it!

And she's fine, thank you.

Merely including this because it's amazing.

Pinnacle Magic World Championship interviewing. If you had "Owen Turtenwald does a bad impression of a Pirate" on coverage bingo, mark your space!

Deck of the Day

  1. Donald Smith's Treasure Red

It didn't work out so well for the future #wotcstaff, but Treasure Red has some interesting things going for it.

For one, it goes bigger than other Ramunap Red decks thanks to Wily Goblin and Captain Lannery Storm speeding up the turn when he can play Chandra, Torch of Defiance; Hazoret the Fervent; and Glorybringer. It keeps the aggression of Ramunap Red while including the power of some of the beefier, scarier red cards in the format.

There's some room to work with the deck, certainly. CodeProvider, for example, went 5-0 with an updated version of the deck on Magic Online.

If you want to know more about the deck, check out the deck tech from over the weekend. If you'd never click on that link because this is a dirty, dirty mono-red deck, well, then you and I can be friends.
