The October 17, 2017 Update

By Blake Rasmussen

Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on October 17, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by a World Champion's tale, posted just after I finished writing yesterday's Update . . .

Today's Must

  1. Josh Lee Kwai the Special Effects Wizard of MTG | Kitchen Table Magic | Hipsters of the Coast | Sam Tang

That title is pretty accurate, as Josh has upped the game of many a Magic video producer simply by existing and being awesome at what he does. He visits Kitchen Table Magic to talk about that voodoo that he do.

After That, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. Green-White Rites – Deck Tech | TCGplayer | Raphaël Lévy

Sram's Expertise was practically made to flip Growing Rites of Itlimoc, so Raphaël Lévy shows off a deck built around flipping the neo-Cradle and throwing mana around like it grows on trees. Which, in this case, it kind of does.

  1. From Becoming the Champ to Making the Best Deck Worse | First Strike Podcast | Mana Deprived | Kar Yung Tom, Robert Lobardi, and Andy Peters

The First Strikers (I'm calling them that now) visit with Canadian National Champion Kale Thompson to not talk about how his first name is the same as a disgusting vegetable. Missed opportunity, if you ask me.

  1. Jhoira vs Mairsil vs Inalla vs Lyzolda EDH / CMDR gameplay for Magic: The Gathering | MTG Muddstah

MTG Muddstah has an interesting way of showing off Commander games—plus a soothing voice that scratches a long-held itch I didn't even know I had. It's just so soothing!

  1. Eternal Weekend Preview | So Many Insane Plays | Kevin Cron and Steve Menendian

Eternal Weekend—a weekend celebrating Legacy and Vintage, including the Vintage and Legacy North American Championships—is this weekend, and that's right in the wheelhouse of So Many Insane Plays. Cron and Menendian talk all things old, slightly less old, and slightly more old.

  1. Yet Another World Championship | MTG Mint Card | Lee Shi Tian

Ho hum, just another World Championship appearance. As you do. When you're Lee Shi Tian, anyway.

What to Watch Tonight

  1. Vintage Super League | | 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET/midnight UTC

Another week, another night of the expected and unexpected. Last week was dominated by, of all things, Hollow One. What other random card will be next to upend Vintage? Tune in tonight to find out.

What People Are Talking About

Mulldrifter and Cruel Ultimatum are already legal, so I don't know that Modern needs anything else.

This is awesome, Kevin! You can check out the preview comic (which is also awesome) here.

Deck of the Day

  1. Standard Blue-Black Chart a Course

Magic Online user Jaberwocki was the one who inspired Lucas Esper Berthoud to pick up a Pirate-flavored Blue-Black Control deck and, you know, merely make the Brazilian National team his first time playing the deck.

Since then, Jaberwocki has again gone 5-0 with the deck, helping prove none of it was a fluke.

This deck, certainly more than other Blue-Black Control lists, is powered by The Scarab God. Kitesail Freebooter is an amazing card to eternalize, as are Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Torrential Gearhulk. Gifted Aetherborn is a concession to the red matchup—and a strong one at that. If you ever bring one of those back with The Scarab God, you've pretty much already won against any red opponent. Heck, you've probably pretty much won against almost anyone.
