Blake is the content manager for, making him the one you should email if you have thoughts on the website, good or less good (or not good). He's a longtime coverage reporter and hasn't turned down a game of Magic in any format ever.

The Daily Magic Update is a roundup of everything Magic you should know on October 31, 2017. Today's Update is brought to you by Halloween. What, did you think I was going to come up with something clever?

What People Are Talking About

Magic Halloween art is coming! This was just one of many cool pieces of Magic-inspired Halloween art. You can find a whole thread of them on the Reddit Halloween arts and crafts thread.

For Halloween, April King and Mark Rosewater are throwing down over puns. Who wins? Who loses? You decide!

(Sorry, Mark, you're great, but April gets my vote here. The second panel got me.)

Also, Read, Watch, or Listen to These

  1. The 13 Scariest Pieces of Magic Art | MTG Salvation | Andrew Weisel

Brain Maggot and Macabre Waltz made the list, so, yes, this list is accurate. I'm pretty sure my darkest nightmares aren't as dark as Macabre Waltz.

  1. Top Ten Spooky Cards | Gathering Magic | Abe Sargent

Brain Maggot and Macabre Waltz also made this list. Seriously. Those cards freak me out.

  1. Commander VS: Halloween Special! | | Justin Parnell and Stephen Green

It's a spooky episode of Commander VS, with the scariest lineup of all—every deck is playing blue! Truly terrifying!

  1. The Boogeyman | TheMagicManSam

So good, it's terrifying. And I could be talking about both the video and Jace, the Mind Sculptor.

  1. MTG Breakdown Rewind – Kenji Egashira at GP Montreal 2014 | MTG Breakdown | Marshall Sutcliffe

In the second Rewind video in the series, Marshall visits with friend of the show Kenji Egashira over one of his most pivotal matches, from way back in 2014. This one doesn't have the benefit of Reid Duke calmly explaining everything, but the concept plays and Kenji is a delight.

  1. What's the Play? | ChannelFireball | Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa

Often, these "what play do you make" articles can be kind of blasé, but this one sucked me in. The voting format is fun, and the scenarios are interesting, even if Paulo does love his Faeries deck a bit too much.

What NOT to Watch Tonight

  1. Vintage Super League | Nowhere | Not tonight

It's Halloween, so the crew from VSL are out trick-or-treating as the scariest things they can think of: Mishra's Workshop plus Trinisphere; an opening seven with no Force of Will; and Gush, either on or off the restricted list, depending on who you talk to.

Deck of the Day

  1. Standard White-Blue God-Pharaoh's Gift

We've come almost full-circle with this God-Pharaoh's Gift thing, as the latest variations ditch trying to search it up with Gate to the Afterlife and go straight to Refurbish-ing it out of the graveyard. That lets the deck play fewer enablers (Minister of Inquiries is no one's idea of a good Magic card) and more—Sacred Cats? You know, for a 1/1 lifelink creature, Sacred Cat sure is seeing a lot of play these days between this and token strategies.
