Blue-Red Tempo in Modern

From Friday Night Magic to the Pro Tour, Adam Prosak loves all types of tournament Magic. Currently, Adam is working in R&D as a developer.

Today's deck is full of cards that have seen success in older formats. Lightning Bolt, Delver of Secrets, Snapcaster Mage, and Young Pyromancer provide the backbone of both Legacy and Vintage decks. All of these cards are Modern legal as well, and Magic Online user betalian has built a deck that takes advantage of these powerful cards in the Modern format.

This deck is a tempo deck at heart. Its goal is to deploy a quick threat, then use a variety of spells to keep the opponent off balance while that creature makes quick work of the opposing life total. Delver of Secrets, Grim Lavamancer, and Young Pyromancer provide the early threats, while various burn spells and counterspells keep the opponent off balance. Burn spells are especially potent in this style of deck as they can help finish off an opponent who has stabilized but has a low life total.

One subtle feature of a deck like this is its low mana curve and low land count. With only a few cards that cost more than two mana, this deck can afford to play fewer lands—in this case, only 19. Unlike other decks with low mana curves, this deck has many cards that are still valuable in a longer game.
