The God of Token Creatures

From Friday Night Magic to the Pro Tour, Adam Prosak loves all types of tournament Magic. Currently, Adam is working in R&D as a developer.

While the Gods in Theros block are at their most potent when they become indestructible creatures, many players forget that the Gods provide abilities not seen on other Magic cards. Purphoros, God of the Forge can become a potent attacker with enough devotion, but this deck capitalizes on the non-devotion aspects of the card. In fact, this deck is not capable of providing the requisite five devotion in order to make Purphoros a creature!

This deck takes advantage of Purphoros, God of the Forge by making lots of tokens and using Purphoros to supply extra damage with those tokens. While dealing 6 damage each time you activate Elspeth, Sun's Champion's +1 ability is nice, don't forget that Purphoros can likely give those creatures +1/+0 a few times.

This deck seems well positioned against the other top decks in Standard while maintaining a high power level. Built-in two-for-one cards like Voice of Resurgence and Scion of Vitu-Ghazi seem like a great place to win the attrition game against Mono-Black Devotion. Mizzium Mortars, Deicide, and Mistcutter Hydra are some of the strongest cards in the format against Mono-Blue Devotion. Finally, the tag team of Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix will make life difficult for the low-to-the-ground aggressive decks.
