Pack Rat has come to invade Modern. Pack Rat has seen considerable success this year in Standard and is often considered one of the strongest cards in Standard. In particular, Thoughtseize is often used to remove answers to the Pack Rat before the Rat can start making token copies of himself. Christopher Dearing has looked at this strategy and brought it into Modern en route to winning a PTQ in Little Rock, Arkansas, and a seat at Pro Tour Khans of Tarkir.

The backbone of this deck is its massive amount of discard spells. Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek start the discard on the first turn, and those are backed up by Tidehollow Sculler and Liliana of the Veil. Many times, both players will be empty handed very quickly, and a single threat can win the game. This deck is packed with those threats. Brimaz, King of Oreskos; Dark Confidant; and Pack Rat are all low-mana threats that are likely to win the game by themselves if unanswered. Lingering Souls is a different type of threat—one that is capable of giving a board presence even through opposing disruption.

Discard is one of the most potent types of disruption in Modern, specifically against many of the combo decks. Back them up with some efficient and powerful threats, and you have a recipe for success!
