Reanimate at Eternal Festival

Most of the decks I'll be showcasing this week come from the Top 8 of the Eternal Festival Tokyo 2014, which took place the first week of November. This event is an annual tournament organized by Goryū-hai (Five Dragon's Cup), one of Tokyo's oldest Magic circles, and is a Legacy championship event that literally sees players from across Japan descend on Tokyo for it. This year marked the fourth time the event has been held, and saw 330 competitors—a new record—fight through nine rounds of Swiss to get to the Top 8 elimination round.

The most notable feature of this deck, which took 2nd place, is without a doubt the sideboard. While Reanimator—which seeks to use discard and spells like Entomb to get fatties into the graveyard and then pull them onto the battlefield—is a tried-and-true combo archetype in Legacy, it can be disrupted with graveyard hate. To get around this, Irie has prepared Painter's Servant and Grindstone. In other words, from the second game, this deck switches gears and transforms into an entirely different type of combo deck.
