Last Chance Grand Prix Trial for Las Vegas

An astonishing number of players turned up to grab the all-important 3 byes offered for GP LV; 137, making it the 2nd largest twilight gathering in North American history. Starting at 7 PM, the 8 round Trial's main rounds carried through to the early morning hours, before beginning the Top 8 at nearly 5 AM.

The bleary eyed competitors carried a wide range of archetypes into the Top 8. While Trix carried 3 players to the Top 8, the discard packing Kix and Dark Force, plus the Walamie's style control deck from PT New Orleans fame, carried their players to 3 Byes. Trix, the unsinkable monster, carried Brian Faires to the 4th set of Byes, and seemed to again put up the best overall numbers on the day.

After the quarterfinals had finished, the tournament organizers looked at the rising dawn, and the state of the competitors, (due to play in the Grand Prix in less than 4 hours), and decided to hand out byes to the Top 4; Gerry Thompson, Brian Faires Ben Hakanson and Nick Burr grinded it out.

Watching their progress over the course of the first day should be interesting. There is a long-standing debate over whether a good night's sleep will carry you farther than Tie-Breakers for making day two and a shot at the money. The lack of sleep seems to be a calculated gamble among the hopefuls, but there is no better city in which to try your luck.
