2009 World Championships PLAY THE GAME, SEE THE WORLD Italian Challenge Series

The PLAY THE GAME, SEE THE WORLD Italian Challenge Series is a series of 10-20 tournaments (plus final tournament) run in 100 stores in Italy from July to October 18, 2009. Players will receive points for match wins and final standings in those tournaments. After all the events have been run, each of the 100 stores will organize between October 19 and November 8, 2009 an 8-person event consisting of the top 8 players from each store’s point-standings.

The winner of each final will earn an invitation to the PLAY THE GAME, SEE THE WORLD Championship tournament, to be held at the 2009 Magic: The Gathering World Championships in Rome, Italy on November 22, 2009. Additional qualifiers will be held at the World Championship. The winner of the PLAY THE GAME, SEE THE WORLD Championship tournament will receive paid airfare and hotel at the 3 2010 Pro Tour Events and the 2010 World Championships, subject to the official rules.

All Universal Tournament Rules and Magic: the Gathering Floor Rules are in effect for this event unless specifically overruled by information in this Format Document.

Entry Fee
  • Contact your local organizer for entry fee.
Format
  • Each tournaments and the final will have a format determined by organizer - Block Constructed, Standard, Extended, Legacy, Booster Draft, or Sealed Deck.
  • Tournaments with less than 8 players will be cancelled.
Tournament Length
  • Swiss rounds - 50 minutes per round
  • Number of Swiss rounds based on attendance according to the following chart:

  • Attendance Number of Swiss rounds
    83 (Single Elim.)
    9-164 (optional Cut to Top 4)
    17 - 325 (optional Cut to Top 8)
    33 - 646 (optional Cut to Top 8)
    65 - 1287 (optional Cut to Top 8)
Advancement
  • All players may participate in all Swiss rounds.
  • The top 8 players after the final Swiss round will advance to the top 8 single-elimination finals (if planned).
Top 8
  • Top 8 matches will be best 2 of 3
  • Top 8 matches will have no time limit.
  • Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will still be used to determine final order in the standings.
Point System
  • During each tournament a player will earn point for:

  • Match Results:
      Win: 3 points
      Draw: 1 point
      Loss: 0 points
    Final Standings Bonus Points:
      1st: +10
      2nd: +6
      3rd-4th: +3
      5th-8th: +1
  • Points earned in a particular store will count towards the standings for that store only.
Final
  • Each Italian Challenge Series will end with a store final.
  • Top 8 players from the Italian Challenge Series final Standings for each store will be invited to the finals at that store. (Invites to the Series Final will pass down in case of someone of the top 8 will be not attending the final).
  • The format of the final will be determined by organizer (Block Constructed, Standard, Extended, Legacy, Booster Draft or Sealed Deck).
  • Deck lists are required
  • Tournaments with less than 8 players will be cancelled.
Prizes
  • The winner of each final will win an invitation to the PLAY THE GAME, SEE THE WORLD Championship Tournament to be held at the 2009 World Championship on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 9:00 AM., which is subject to the official rules.
  • Product Prizes as determined by the organizer.

  • Players must bring pen, paper, card sleeves and appropriate counters.
