Big Boros Brew

Luis Scott-Vargas plays, writes, and makes videos about Magic. He has played on the Pro Tour for almost a decade, and between that and producing content for ChannelFireball, often has his hands full (of cards).

The newest incarnation of Chandra, Pyromaster is apparently a force to be reckoned with, at least according to Chris VanMeter's article on Big Boros. As promised, the deck is a higher-curve take on an aggressive archetype, and lands squarely in midrange territory.

Chandra, Pyromaster

With Mutavault, Chandra's Phoenix, Boros Reckoner, Thundermaw Hellkite, and burn spells, Chris's deck certainly threatens to deliver lethal promptly, making opponents care about their life totals much more than is normal against a control deck. Between Bonfire of the Damned, Pillar of Flame, Searing Spear, and Warleader's Helix, burning an opponent out from 12 life is not all that unrealistic, meaning that even a few hits from a Phoenix is something to be concerned about.

On the flip side, five sweepers, cheap burn spells, defensive Reckoners, and the full set of Chandras give the deck a legitimate shot of playing the control role when appropriate. Against the wide variety of aggro decks in the format, Big Boros can easily kill all the early creatures and pull ahead on cards via Chandra, letting it finish the game with a Hellkite. Chandra does double duty here, acting as a Jayemdae Tome or Goblin Shortcutter as necessary (quite the split card indeed).

The sideboard allows the deck to emphasize whichever role it's trying to play in any given matchup. Against control, siding in Burning Earth and Zealous Conscripts keeps the pressure on, and against aggro, a full package of Rolling Temblor, Ratchet Bomb, and Blind Obedience lets Big Boros protect itself. Blind Obedience is especially good at slowing down the opponent's offense while presenting a threat and increasing pressure, which is a good fit with the deck's entire philosophy.
