As we wrap up 2012 and start 2013, I'll begin my term as author of Daily Decks with a look back on some of the most successful decks of 2012. As my way of introducing myself, I think it's most fitting to lead off with a deck I helped design, and since this is the first day of a "year in review"–style retrospective, I think it's most fitting to start with the first Pro Tour of the year, Pro Tour Dark Ascension, in February.

Lingering Souls

Delver of Secrets and Snapcaster Mage had been dominating Standard, and the big question was whether Dark Ascension could change that. Lingering Souls was the hottest new card, and I was confident it would be a major player in and against Delver of Secrets.

In a time when the traditional way to go bigger than the opponent was to play a Sword of War and Peace and fight to stop your opponent's Sword, I decided to try to avoid the artifact battle by using Drogskol Captain and Phantasmal Image to create much larger fliers than my opponent.

The resulting deck helped Jon Finkel make his way to the finals and Jelger Wiegersma earn a Top 8 finish.
