Child of Alara Commander

When Gavin Verhey was eleven, he dreamt of a job making Magic cards—and now as a Magic designer, he's living his dream! Gavin has been writing about Magic since 2005.

Sometimes a Commander deck serves as an extension of its creator's creativity, a way to show off the intricacies of one particular legendary creature or an expression of a theme. Other times, it can simply be a collection of awesome cards designed to smash face! In this case, it's the latter. Sean McKeown's Commander deck doctor column tuned up a reader's five-color "good stuff" deck this week, filling it with all kinds of chromatic goodies designed to intensify both power and fun alike!

This deck is filled to the brim with expensive multicolored cards. No mana cost is too absurd to keep out—this Commander deck even features Brilliant, Cruel, and Violent Ultimatum! Plenty of strong sweepers like Lavalanche, Austere Command, Decree of Pain, and even the deck's Commander (Child of Alara) help the deck get to the long game.

Once this deck has successfully made it to the late game, a variety of top-heavy creatures and spells can take over. Few opponents will be able to match this deck's volley of power! Between huge creatures, cataclysmic spells, and even Legacy Weapon to start erasing permanents from existence, there's plenty of crazy fun to be had.

Playing all five colors in Commander puts every card in Magic (banned list aside) at your fingertips. How would you improve this deck? What inspiration can you take from it? Take a look at the list below and let your mind go wild!
