Feel the Burn

If there is one deck archetype more iconic than any other over the entire span of Magic, I think there is a strong argument in favor of that deck being Mono-Red. Over the years, it has taken on many forms and has enjoyed varying degrees of success, but its game plan has always been simple and has always been the same: Burn the opponent out as quickly as possible. Whether it was Jackal Pup, Figure of Destiny, or Goblin Guide doing the heavy lifting, Mono-Red has always been viable to some degree. At times, like recently, it falls out of favor due to unfavorable conditions in the metagame, but for any given tournament, it can do extremely well.

Stromkirk Noble

Blaine Miller concluded that any given tournament should be his 2012 Tennessee States. With a new powerful two-drop in Ash Zealot available to it, the deck, Blaine figured, was poised for a comeback. It is aimed at picking on all of the slower midrange decks—specifically, Frites and Snapcaster Mage decks. Stromkirk Noble and Vexing Devil make for a pretty nice pair of one-drops in the list, but I would also be interested in seeing a list that uses Rakdos Cackler. Guttersnipe is another interesting addition to the list. While his body is not all that impressive, his trigger can add up to a lot of damage quickly.

Now, there is something to be said for the fact that this is not a true Mono-Red list. While its mentality is definitely Mono-Red, Falkenrath Aristocrat and Bump in the Night are technically black cards, but they burn the opponent's face just as well as any red spell can. There is nothing scarier than being at 12 life and then your opponent casts an end-of-turn Searing Spear targeting you...

After all, what is scarier than something that goes Bump in the Night?
