Golgari Hexproof

By Luis Scott-Vargas

Luis Scott-Vargas plays, writes, and makes videos about Magic. He has played on the Pro Tour for almost a decade, and between that and producing content for ChannelFireball, often has his hands full (of cards).

One of the main reasons I wanted to feature today's deck is that it's running Skylasher, a card that I think has the potential to be awesome in the current metagame. It ambushes many of mono-blue's small creatures, stops Nightveil Specter cold, and can't really be interacted with. It isn't the end-all be-all, because Master of Waves and Thassa can go over the top, but for two mana it's a pretty good deal.

Gift of Orzhova

The rest of the deck looks solid, too, and shares many elements with a deck that Brian Kibler was testing before Pro Tour Theros (although we ultimately did not play it). In particular, Gift of Orzhova paired with aggressive green and black creatures can be a huge beating, and Kibler liked it even without the Witchstalkers that this deck employs. Once Witchstalker does get wings, it becomes very hard to race, and nearly impossible to kill, although it's unlikely that Desecration Demon is dying anytime soon (with the obvious drawback that it can get tapped down, of course).

Dreg Mangler and Deathrite Shaman provide additional pressure, along with a full set of Mutavaults. The deck isn't that aggressive overall, though, unlike past hexproof decks, but Thoughtseize, Hero's Downfall, and Vraska give it a bunch of solid tools for the mid- to late game. In fact, I'd look to play this more as a controlish deck against everything but mono-black and Esper, where you kill their threats and try and assemble Gift on any of your resilient creatures.

One card whose stock has dramatically risen lately is Lotleth Troll. There aren't that many Azorius Charms running around, it dodges both Doom Blade and Ultimate Price, and it doesn't die in creature combat unless things get strange. I'd definitely try adding Trolls to this deck, especially given that Troll can play defense pretty well if needed. It's a great Gift target, and just a really good card overall.
