Grixis Artifact Control

When Gavin Verhey was eleven, he dreamt of a job making Magic cards—and now as a Magic designer, he's living his dream! Gavin has been writing about Magic since 2005.

The blue-black-red color combination hasn't seen a ton of play in Standard recently, but Magic Online player JesseTN is looking to change all of that. Showing up to a Magic Online Daily Event with a Kuldotha Phoenix-powered control deck, JesseTN put a new spin on the Grixis Control archetype.

The deck has all of the hallmarks of a traditional control deck. It has a laundry list of removal spells to deal with creatures and a full eight accelerants in Pristine Talisman and Sphere of the Suns.

Perhaps most interesting is its suite of card drawing. Between Think Twice, Forbidden Alchemy, and Faithless Looting, the deck can quickly sift to whatever it's looking for. Alchemy and Looting interact well with the rest of the deck, dumping cards with flashback into the graveyard. In this deck, cards like Forbidden Alchemy and Faithless Looting generate much more of an advantage than they would elsewhere!

All of that discarding is put to good use with the deck's main finisher: Kuldotha Phoenix! JesseTN's deck can hit metalcraft with ease, and at that point it's going to be difficult for an opponent to deal with his onslaught of 4/4 hasted fliers.

This deck combines some great elements of Scars of Mirrodin block with much of what Innistrad has had to offer. The blend of the old and new makes for a fun deck to play, and is perfect to try out at Friday Night Magic tonight. Give it a look!
