Necropotence is arguably one of Magic's most important cards. Certainly it is one of the most powerful, but its utter dominance of the game for years and from format to format is something that hasn't been seen since its day. One of the most famous Necrodecks is the one Randy Buehler used to win his very first Pro Tour, Chicago in 1997. Named after his CMU teammate Erik Lauer (who now works in Magic R&D designing new Magic cards), Randy's deck was innovative in that it used a full complement of Demonic Consultations, abused Firestorm, and didn't play Nevinyrral's Disk or Dark Ritual, both staples of the era. Buehler eventually left the Pro Tour to take a job at Wizards of the Coast, and you can read about his experiences with Necropotencehere and watch the Pro Tour-Chicago finals' deciding game via part one and part two.
