I haven't looked at Modern much lately, but with Grand Prix Portland coming up, it's becoming a format for me to pay attention to. For the most part, the format is pretty stable, and recent Magic Online results feature a lot of the decks we've become accustomed to in Modern—Infect, Birthing Pod, Affinity, Jund, and the like.

Trading Post

While using Expedition Map to assemble the Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Tower combination known as "Tron" may not be especially new, ContraEgo takes the engine in a slightly different direction.

ContraEgo uses Treasure Mage to find any of a wide variety of high-impact artifacts: Platinum Angel, Spine of Ish Sah, Sundering Titan, Wurmcoil Engine, Mindslaver, and—from the sideboard—Steel Hellkite and Contagion Engine. These are backed by a heavy dose of counterspells, acceleration, and some removal, mostly in the form of Repeal.

Thirst for Knowledge offers this deck its card draw, as with most blue Tron decks, but what we don't see is a secondary card advantage instant like Gifts Ungiven. Instead, ContraEgo takes card drawing more incrementally with cards like Remand and Repeal smoothing the heavy lifting done by Thirst for Knowledge.

The card I'm most excited to see is the exceptionally fun Trading Post, which is at its best with cards like Solemn Simulacrum, but which also allows Mindslaver to get to work stealing multiple turns before the Academy Ruins engine is fully online to allow ContraEgo to control every action taken in the rest of the game.
