Modern Dredge

Anytime more graveyard shenanigans are released it means players will try to find ways to break them, and no deck utilizes the graveyard more than the infamous Dredge deck! With multiple components of the traditional Dredge deck banned in Modern, some players have taken to finding new ways to revisit the mechanic.

Magic Online's SledgeSliver is one such player. In a recent Magic Online Daily Event, SledgeSliver took a revitalized version of the deck and ran it to a 3–1 record. Using cards from the past mixed with some exciting new additions, SledgeSliver has made the deck look like it never has before.

The deck sets up by putting lots of cards into its graveyard. Hedron Crab alongside fetchlands, cards with dredge, and Ideas Unbound all play toward this goal. The newcomer Faithless Looting plays a huge role, dumping cards into your graveyard from your hand, providing you with two dredges, or just being a card-selection spell that is put into your graveyard while you set up.

Once your graveyard is stocked, it's time for the real fun to begin. With all of the cheap creatures in this deck, Vengevine is incredibly easy to return for free, providing multiple 4/3 hasted creatures that won't go away. Innistrad block provides two great tools in Gravecrawler and Skaab Ruinator, providing huge bodies. To top it off, even though you're casting them from the graveyard, that's still considered casting them, sending all those Vengevines right onto the battlefield!

If things get dicey with plan A, the deck also has a reanimation plan B. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite plus Unburial Rites can threaten a huge body. If you need to buy time to get there, Gnaw to the Bone provides the deck with plenty of life to sit on.

With a little graveyard hate in people's sideboards, it might be high time to bust out the dredge cards. Check out SledgeSliver's deck, and give it a try in a Modern PTQ!
