Wizards of the Coast Staff

Last weekend, the StarCityGames Open in Worcester kicked off the new season of Standard. It gave us a preview of what Standard might look like, demonstrated the effectiveness of new Theros cards, and most importantly showed us where the wild things are. The answer to that last one is Christopher Posporelis's RG deck, as it's got no shortage of monsters. He made Top 8 with the classic strategy of Elves and Dragons, which has been a deck for as long as Magic has existed.


The deck starts with eight mana producers, which in this case take the form of Elvish Mystic and Sylvan Caryatid. Mystic is the most efficient ramp creature in Standard, and Caryatid is the most resilient, making it likely this deck can hit its drops a turn ahead of schedule.

Threats this deck isn't lacking in, as the high-impact cards basically make up the rest of the deck. They start at three with Domri Rade, one of the best anti-control cards around. Domri finds you a good selection of creatures, including the four-drop squad of Polukranos, World Eater; Ghor-Clan Rampager; and Ember Swallower. PolyK and Ember Swallower are even secretly seven drops, as they give you something to do when you have a ton of mana—something this deck often ends up with. Chandra, Pyromaster provides another solid four, and another way to get ahead against removal. The deck tops out at five with Stormbreath Dragon, which is one of the best threats possible. It dodges a ton of commonly-played removal, hits for 4 immediately, and can do a ton more damage if it untaps.

Of course, not literally every card is a mana source or a huge threat, as sometimes you do end up not drawing a ramp card. In those cases, you don't want to do nothing until turn four, which is where Scavenging Ooze and the removal suite come in. Four Mizzium Mortars and three Lightning Strikes gives the deck plenty of play, and Mortars again gives the deck a mana sink and a cheap card all in one.

If you like casting large creatures and bashing, it doesn't get much better than this deck, and I challenge you to find a more monstrous assortment of threats.
