Norin the Brave

Luis Scott-Vargas plays, writes, and makes videos about Magic. He has played on the Pro Tour for almost a decade, and between that and producing content for ChannelFireball, often has his hands full (of cards).

Every time I think I've got Modern figured out, a new character shows up. This time, it happens to be everyone's favorite adventurer, none other than Norin the Wary. Norin made his debut in the flavor text of Alpha's Jade Statue, and his legacy continues in that vein. Finally, he got his own card in Time Spiral and was widely derided as one of the least useful cards in the set.

Norin the Wary

After six long years of hiding, Norin is finally getting the last laugh! An extremely clever player by the name of GFSnl played a deck featuring three copies of Norin to 3–1 in a Daily Event, and it's pretty cool how many synergies there are in the deck.

The core is based on Soul Sisters, a mono-white lifegain deck that sees a moderate amount of play; the addition of red is what makes the deck really pop. Norin does a lot of work here, as the deck takes advantage of his propensity to run and hide at every opportunity. There are three main ways this utilizes Norin. The first is by combining him with Soul Warden or Soul's Attendant, which lets you gain life on each player's turn. That in turn makes Ajani's Pridemate grow to an unmanageable level. Champion of the Parish also grows, with no Soul Warden needed, and Genesis Chamber forms a double combo, making tokens off of Norin and comboing with the Soul Wardens.

At the end of all this, you will end up with a ton of life, a ton of tokens out, and a few unreasonably large creatures. If that isn't enough to win the game, you probably had a pretty big problem to begin with.

The addition of red also adds a few more tools to the deck's arsenal, with Grim Lavamancer, Lightning Bolt, and Pillar of Flame all ready to burn enemies. Sideboard Blood Moon can pick up some free wins, and I wouldn't mind trying a few instead of just one.

I'm a little wary of playing this deck without testing, but it looks pretty sweet, and I have to give GFSnl credit for finding a way to use Norin at long last.
