White-Blue Urzatron

When Gavin Verhey was eleven, he dreamt of a job making Magic cards—and now as a Magic designer, he's living his dream! Gavin has been writing about Magic since 2005.

The diverse new Modern format has given several players another chance to use some of their favorite cards from the past, and professional Magic player Luis Scot-Vargas is no exception. At Grand Prix Lincoln this past weekend, Luis dusted off his Urza's Towers, Urza's Power Plants, and Urza's Mines, putting them to good use and rocketing his way to the Top 8 of the tournament!

The core of this deck revolves around the "Urzatron" lands. While each one only taps for a single colorless mana on its own, by assembling Urza's Tower, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Mine, the deck can churn out expensive spells with little effort. The trick has always been assembling all three lands at once—but fortunately, that's easier than ever to do in Modern! Plenty of card-drawing and digging like Thirst for Knowledge, Condescend, and Remand help this deck find its pieces, and Expedition Map serves as a straight-up Demonic Tutor effect for any piece you're missing!

Once you've carefully dug out all three pieces of the Urzatron—or just draw them all naturally—it's time to start casting gigantic spells! And how can you get larger than the Eldrazi? Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn convert all of that mana into a threat few decks can handle. Of course, you can also just cast Gifts Ungiven, finding only Iona, Shield of Emeria and Unburial Rites.

Scott-Vargas's deck adds yet another wrinkle into the diverse Modern metagame. With the Modern PTQ season in full swing, could this deck rise to the top of the format? Try it for yourself in an upcoming qualifier for Barcelona and find out!
