Zombies!

When Gavin Verhey was eleven, he dreamt of a job making Magic cards—and now as a Magic designer, he's living his dream! Gavin has been writing about Magic since 2005.

TCGPlayer.com columnist and 2011 World Championships Top 8 finisher Craig Wescoe talked about some exciting new Dark Ascension decks in his article this week. One archetype he highlights for the new Standard format is none other than the lurching menace itself: Zombies!

This deck aims to run over the opponent as quickly as possible. With eight 2-power one-drops at the deck's disposal, the deck can regularly have 6 points of power sitting in play on turn two! If your opponent begins to amass a defense, Geralf's Messenger and Diregraf Captain can help you push through the last few bites of damage.

But where the deck really shines is its resiliency. True to form, the creatures in this Zombie deck don't like to stay dead! Between Gravecrawler and Geralf's Messenger, the deck shrugs off pinpoint removal and can recover from mass removal with little effort. Add disruptive elements of the deck like Distress and Liliana of the Veil to the mix and you have a blend of cards very difficult to fight off.

Could Zombies have a breakout performance at Pro Tour Dark Ascension this weekend? Stay tuned to the expanded coverage all weekend to find out!
