Modern

Introduced in 2011, Modern is a format designed to bridge the gap between Standard (which rotates sets once a year) and Legacy (a non-rotating format that allows cards from all of Magic's history). Expansions and core sets with the newer card frame (starting with Mirrodin and Eighth Edition) are legal in Modern.

Deck Construction Rules

The basic points of deck construction for Modern are:

  • 60-card deck (minimum)
  • 4-copy limit (except basic lands)
  • 0-card or 15-card sideboard (exactly)
  • Only cards from sets using the modern card frame (which began with Mirrodin and Eighth Edition); see the complete set list below

Building a deck in Modern follows the basic Constructed guidelines (at least sixty cards, no more than four copies of any card except basic lands, fifteen-card sideboard or no sideboard). The only constraint is in which sets are legal for the format (see below).

Finding Modern on Magic Online Wide Beta

  1. Choose Game Type
  2. Choose tournament style or skill level
  3. Choose your deck (Magic Online will auto-select the correct format)
  4. Choose any additional options (such as "Multiplayer")
  5. Click Next Game in Open Play or choose your tournament from the results and join

Details and B&R List

Modern is a non-rotating format, which means that new cards are added to the format's overall card pool but none are removed (although some are banned). Because it is a newer format and R&D wants to make sure it remains vibrant, the banned list is actively maintained. For example, cards on the banned list don't necessarily stay there forever, as recently seen with the unbanning of Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle.

The following card sets are permitted in Modern tournaments:

  • Eighth Edition
  • Mirrodin
  • Darksteel
